Question about 1997 Dodge Grand Caravan

1 Answer

The engine light came on. My mechanic put the little scanner on it and came up with a code (he didn't tell me what it was) that he said had to do with the emissions valve. $200 to fix. My question is... what if it is caused by some bad gas?? the gas cap is secure. I'd like to keep driving it for awhile, getting new gas, but how can I reset the engine light? I have a 06 Dodge Grand Caravan. thanks.

As long as there is a problem with the valve the light will stay on. I would take it to another mechanic for two reasons. 1 second opinion, 2 the mechanic should have told you the code and explained what the problem was, not just give you a price. And I think $200.00 is alittle steep

My 96 plymouth breeze check engine light came on, however it doesnt seem to be driving bad or any different. What could the problem be?

It's best not to guess about this, there are a lot of things that can cause this. As long as the vehicle is driving ok go to an Auto Zone near you and ask them to use the code scanner and tell you what codes are stored. They will tell you what the codes are and what they mean. Most likely this will be an O2 sensor or MAP sensor but we won't know until you get the codes read on the computer.

It may go out on its own, the next time the computer does a routine system check. If two or three runs around town over the next few days doesn't clear it, only a dealer or a good mechanic with the proper scanner can turn it off.

You will need to get engine on #1 TDC. then put rotor at number 1 on dist cap. You will need a scanner to set CAM ****** to "0" with engine speed above 1300 rpm. No way to do it without scanner.

My check fuel cap light came on the other day after having been at the gas station. I later tightened the cap & the light remained on. Now several days later the check engine light has come on too,...

Ok,you could have a bad fuel cap or o-ring on the cap. could be you just didn't quite get the cap on good enough the last time you got gas so in turn the light comes on. unfortunately these things are so sensitive that the light doesn't go out even though you have tried taking it off and putting it back on. My advise is, check out your local auto parts stores. such as Autozone, or Advance. Most auto parts stores anymore will hook up a small scanner to your car and can tell you what the problem may be. not as good as a dealers repair shop could tell you,but should be able to let you know if it is nothing serious or could be. if it is something serious then you would of course have to see mechanical help. and if its nothing serious, like the only thing showing up is gas cap not on good, they can clear out the code and your light will go off and your good to go.if it turns out that's all it was and the code is cleared, and it keeps coming on, you could have a more serious problem and should have a qualified mechanic check it out. if you don't have an Autozone or Advance near you, just check your local auto parts stores and see if they offer the service of checking your vehicle when lights like this come on. and it should be a FREE service. Autozone and Advance is and most should be. i know this is long, but i hope it helps.

Service engine soon light stays on and just had the oil changed, along with oil filter, fuel filter and air filter. Car was running rough prior to this now its missing bad and died while it was in park...

If the car was built 1996 and after, you can get the codes scanned at Auto Zone for free (unless you live in CA) and they will give you a print out of the codes. Without knowing more about the car (you didn't put in any year or engine info, or symptoms) I can't tell you what could be wrong with it.

Check engine light on in 93 Lexus

The only way to check why the check engine light is on is to have autozone or a mechanic put a scanner on the car and read the engine codes. This will tell you exactly what is wrong. Many part stores will test it for free. Mechanics will charge about $40 But you will definately know exactly what the problem is.

If gauge is fine and car smells hot. It is probably due to plugged exhaust unless you have a wire laying on the exhaust manifold and it's melting.

Check engine light on, car shakes while in reverse, stalls ...

You need a code scanner hooked up to find out what is causing the light ot come on. Some auto part stores can do that. Once the code is retrieved, they can tell you what sensor is causing it.
