changed battery now won't stay running

  • bugowner Jan 06, 2009

My 2000 beetle will start and run fine if the temperature is above 40 degrees F. but on cold mornings the starter will turn the engine over and the car will start and the immediately die. On subsequent attempts thr car will continue to do the same thing for ten to fifteen attempts. Starts then dies.

After the weather warms up the car starts and runs fine. We only have one key right now, so it might be the key. Does this sound like the same problem? Marc

Do you have an icon with a key show up? The immobilzer 2 is shutting you down if you can find try another of your keys the transponder chip may have broken it is in th plastic not the metal. If you have a key made you need your 4 digit SKC to have it installed or the VW shop or a very specilized locksmith needs to fix it. Half of the IMOBilzer is in the cluster the other box is under the dash plus the part in the key.

Car wont stay running after initial start up?

Will it stay running if you keep the pedal depressed. If so you have a Idle Air Control valve issue. If it wont run at all it may be a bad fuel pump

2000 silverado will start but wont stay running just dies.

I also agree it sounds like a fuel pump issue. Its easiest to remove the box (6 bolts {need impact wrench} disconnect wires at plugs and disconnect gas filler hose) and lift box up. A hoist is easiest but 6 people can lift it easily. The fuel pump can easily then be replaced. Takes about 1 1/2 hrs. to do entire job this way and its so much easier!
Good Luck!

look for a bad fuel line.
Sometimes when taking a sharp turn the tire will pinch the fuel line.

Battery light on, takes forever to start then dies once started

if you can get the car started again and with someone helping you have them take the positive side of the battery cable off while it is running and if it dies then it is the alternator also check your drive belt and when was the last time it was changed because it could be slipping

My car wont stay running

Does the engine die as soon as you release the key, or does it run for a couple of seconds after you release the key and then die? If it dies as soon as you release the key, try holding the key for a few seconds and see if it will stay running as long as you are holding the key (the starter will make a grinding sound while holding the key but won't hurt anything). If it stays running while you hold the key then dies when you release it, that indicates that the ignition switch is bad.
