1 Answer

1989 buick regal 2.8 stalls out. it will start and run well for 5 seconds and then just die. it starts better with a spark plug disconnected. fuel pressure is 40lbs. plenty of spark from coils. replaced ECM, coolant temp sensor and crankshaft position sensor.

ronaldo, thanks for your suggestion. the cat is not clogged (when the engine runs plenty of exhaust comes out the tailpipe). changed the fuel filter and it seems to run ok now. maybe it was a clogged fuel filter. the car still needs a tune up. thanks.

The catalytic converter maybe clogged. This would result in a car starting then cutting off. you can unbolt the catalytic converter see if that solve the problem. Then if that was the problem replace it with a new one. Goodluck.

Why won't it start?

Check ignition wires, too. They can get old and let the spark leak out.

Check coolant temp sensor. If bad, it will make computer think the engine is still cold, causing excessive fuel delivery and flooding. These sensors can be removed and tested (see instructions in shop manual)

1988 buick regal stalls and restarts stalls and restarts

Sounds like a relay or coil failing.
To proceed you would need to find out if you are loosing spark to the plugs or fuel pressure to the injectors when it won't start.

1993 Buick Regal 3.1 - just purchased for my son and it's been running fine for about 2 weeks. One day he was driving and it stalled and would not re-start. Changed the fuel filter, pump is working fine. ...

Do you have a check engine light on? If yes; try to get the code, have someone loan you a scan tool to access the codes. If you do not have a check engine light on it is not a ecm control issue, ie. (cam or crank sensors etc). Suspect the fuel pump. If you are certain it is working ok. Next is to check the coil pack and Ignition module. Look for spark at the plugs. Pull a plug wire and look / listen for spark to jump out the end to bear metal as you spin the engine trying to start it.

You have a problem in the fuel pump relay circuit for sure then. I'm betting the relay, but it could be that dropping resistor.
