Question about Ford Focus

My vent selector switch became hard to turn. I was trying to change it and it popped. Now all I have is defrost. Do I need to buy a new climate control head or the bowden cables. What are the cables connected to a blend door or just coiled up??

    I have a 2005 ford focus ZX3. Sometimes the vent selector switch would be hard to turn. I would play with it and it eventually would change. Try to find a defrost diversion door or the climate control head?? Where exactly is the door inside the air ducting?? Hard to get too??

It would be helpful if I knew the model and year Ford you have, but based on what you are saying and my 25+ years as a Ford dealer service technican the problem is that the defrost air diversion door is warped inside the air ducting and this has caused the overloaded dash control to break, i have run across this many times, the cable itself is most likely just fine. Try and find a used on in a local salvage yard as new ones are not available for anything this old.

    The door is inside the air duct behind the dash, to access it you must remove the dash completely from the car. In order to have a happy outcome to a job this big you will need a factory service manual or you may never get everything hooked up right.

1997 Ford Taurus front defrost not working


. Air won't blow out of the floor or center vents just defrost ? Do you have manual or automatic climate control ?
Air Flow Control
Air flow control is accomplished in the following manner:
  • Primary control is through the function selector knob mounted on the A/C-heater function selector switch, which is part of the integrated control panel.
  • The function selector knob has the following positions: OFF, MAX A/C, A/C, PANEL, PANEL/FLOOR, FLOOR, FLOOR/DEFROST and DEFROST. The A/C-heater function selector switch combines a vacuum selector valve with an internal electrical switch.
  • The vacuum selector valve directs source vacuum to various vacuum control motors (18A318). Refer to the Vacuum Control Diagram , System Airflow Schematics and Vacuum Control Chart .
  • Two internal, single-pole electrical switches are also controlled by the A/C-heater function selector switch. The combination of these electrical switches controls the electrical supply to the A/C clutch and heater blower motor switch (18578).
  • The position of the function selector knob determines the manner in which the system will operate.
  • Each position of the function selector knob is detented for positive engagement.
  • Vacuum Control Motors The vacuum control motors (18A318):
    • are located on the A/C evaporator housing, A/C recirculation air duct and heater air plenum chamber (18471).
    • direct system airflow to the vehicle interior as determined by the remote climate control module or manual override.
    • The five-passenger seating configuration has an additional vacuum control motor mounted on the heater air plenum chamber to control airflow to the rear seat A/C register (19893).

2006 focus cant get it off defrost


my knob broke from turning it because it became hard to turn--- i think the actuator is jammed or broke because even with a new knob, it turns freely and does not change selections.

My a/c blows out of defrost vents and the selector wont change it


Your selector is controlled either my linkage or pressure tubes. A common problem is for a crack to develop in the hoses and leak the pressure needed to switch to the desired setting. Inspect the hoses and or linkage. that will solve it

My blower only blows threw the defrost vents. all climates everything, no matter where i put the control knob. dealership says the solenoid got stuck closed after using my 4 wheel drive.


Assuming you have vacuum controls at the heater control head, you have a classic vacuum leak in the hose from the engine intake manifuold to the control head, or the vaccum storage canister somewhere in the engine compartment. It is required to fail to defrost by law.

Climate Control Assembly
The climate control assembly has 3 system controls:
  • The function selector switch combines a vacuum selector valve with 2 electrical switches to supply battery positive voltage (B+) to the blower motor control circuit and the A/C clutch circuit (if equipped).
Vacuum Control Motors
The 2 vacuum control motors:
  • are actuated by vacuum from the function selector switch.
  • position the plenum doors to direct system airflow to the vehicle's interior as determined by the function selector switch setting.
The vacuum reservoir is behind the driver fender well, black plastic ball.

If you have diesel, then you will have a vacuum motor under the hood.

Air distribution within the vehicle is determined by the function selector switch position. Two airflow mode doors are used to direct airflow within the heater core and evaporator core housing. The function selector switch/cable assembly is used to position these airflow mode doors. Refer to Section 412-00 for description and operation of each of the system functions.

Function Selector Cable Assembly
The function selector cable assembly moves the airflow mode doors to the desired position using a 2-sided pull-pull type cable assembly. The function selector controls the cable movement. The end of the cable assembly attaches to the airflow mode door/temperature blend door actuating assembly which transfers the cable movement to the 2 airflow mode doors.
An electrical switch is incorporated into the function selector to notify the A/C switch assembly if DEFROST or FLOOR/DEFROST is selected. When DEFROST or FLOOR/DEFROST is selected, the A/C switch assembly will disable the RECIRC request button and send an A/C request to the powertrain control module (PCM) regardless of the A/C request button indicator ON/OFF status.

  1. Remove the 4 bolts and position aside the lower steering column cover.

Blower vent selector switch not working. Only works in defroster position


this is what is called a factory default. for safety purposes if there is a problem with the wiring in the climate control system it defaule to the defrost position so you can see out the window. this can be a pretty tough job, the whole dash may have to come off. unless you well versed in automotive diagnostics and troubleshooting, and have the right equipment, I would take it to a local automotive technician.

Climate control stuck in defrost/floor vents


The problem is probably a faulty diverter door actuator or vacuum problem at the HVAC plenum under the dash. This is a common problem - see YouTube for help diagnosing this:

Climate control


There is a vacuum line that operates your selector switch, it is located under the hood, roughly in the center, up against the fire wall. If the line has leaks, your selector switch will not work and therefore all your blower doors will stay shut. Replace the line.
