I suggest that you take it into a mechanic or the dealer because there are linkages inside that might be damaged so fix this right away and do this as soon as possible or you could damage even more and could cost more to fix if you do not fix it now !!

I have a Kia Sportage 1999 model automatic, it is stuck in first gear,is there a way I can fix myself without spending a fortune on it?

The short answer is yes, you can get it out of gear by getting underneath the car and removing the shift cable from the transmission and then manually pulling it out of gear. If it still is jammed then you have a serious problem that will require a tranmsiion removal and repair. If it comes out easily then it is a cable problem and you need to find out why the cable is jamming which should not be too hard.

Tip

"Mechanics magnet"

Working on autos could be greasee & messy but to forget where everything is could be the worst nightmare of all. When I work on my vehicles I get myself a old blanket to lay over the engine so I could rest on top of it, but then, don't forget the old speaker magnet that we usually have around and place it somewhere stuck to the metal body or engine and keep your small bolts, washers & other tools that you may need to have around, very usefull when you whant to keep miselaneous thins stuck around you.

Dont forget the magnet force..
