You can buy a 30 dollar code reader at a parts store, or you can take it to a parts store such as advance or autozone and they will put theirs on your car for free. then you will have the codes.
note the guys working there were selling pizza last week and delivering papers a week before that.
some experience as a mechanic is helpful once you know the codes.

Check engine light flashes once then 5times

It sounds like a code. reffer to this discussion about it. you can either count the blinks or take the vehicle to your local autozone and have them hook up a code reader and let you know what the problem is.

The speedometer cable on 1994 toyota t100 is not working. can this cause check engine light to come on

This vehicle is equipped with speed sensors instead of a cable. If your speed sensor is faulty it will cause the speedometer to malfunction, and the "check engine indicator" to light up. I would still recommend having the vehicle's computer scanned for the error code stored, signaling the check engine light.

1996 Toyota t100 check engine light on. Changed spark plugs and wires. No difference in sluggish running and light is still on

What codes do you have?
You start with the check light issues first

I just parted with a truck, I had over 18 years with OE Plug wires,
one before 17 years ,and my current one, 20 years,I have owned it 27
Had one wire burn out near plug in 1990

Plugs never misfire by design, they do however wear the electrodes,
which stresses ignition modules

94 Camry was running fine, suddenly became sluggish

How did you try to obtain the codes? Did you short pins E1 and Te1 in the grey connector under the hood?

When the light comes back on, short the above pins, and get back to us.

Without seeing the codes, I would venbture a guess that you first consider a good tune-up, and use Toyota plugs only. Any other manufacturer will not work very well. I see this every day, new plugs, and the engine runs poor. Toyota plugs fixes it right up. The heat ranges are diffferent in Toyota plugs.
