Question about 1999 Oldsmobile Silhouette

1 Answer

Got a 1998 Oldsmobile Silhouette. The engine will turn but won't start without giving it a good bit of gas but then dies shortly afterwards. What could be wrong with it? My husband used a little computer scanner we have and it said Theft fuel enable incorrect. What does this mean and how do i fix it?

I have a feeling that I will be posting this recommendation often as most people do not know about it. Your throttle body is gunked up to kingdom come with engine grime and is sticking not allowing the proper amount of air to get into your engine.

CLEAN the throttle body. there is a metal flap inside that is getting stuck. Check here to see a clean throttle body

Here is the quick and dirty: Your gas pedal is hooked up to a wire or motor that turns a flap open and closed and various degrees of open and closed as you apply and take pressure off of the pedal. this flapper gets gunked up and sticks. it is the sticking that causes your car to choke and die :)

Go buy CRC Throttle Body Cleaner and remove the throttle body and spray that in there and wipe clean with a towel.

Search forums for vehicle specific instructions on how to remove the throttle body and clean it. Guaranteed you are not the only person with this issue.

I will try and help for your Olds.

1. Open the hood, look at then engine.
2. On the right side there will be an air intake tube that is black and hooked up to your air box and throttle body with hose clamps
3. Losen the hose clamp from the throttle body and remove the black air hose from it and gently move it out of the way.
--> If you do not want to remove the throttle body completely, skip to step #7
4. there will be 4 bolts holding the throttle body to the intake manifold.
5. Note any and all electrical connections to the throttle body.
6. Remove the electrical connections (unplug) and remove the bolts (4) and the throttle body should come off.
7. Spray CRC Throttle Body Cleaner all over and wipe clean with a cloth that can get really dirty.
8. Make it SHINE :) then reinstall
9. put 4 bolts back on, reconnect the electrical connections you remembered from step #5
10. Reconnect the black air hose and tighten the hose clamp...

Done!

Start the car and it should be good as new. (sort of)

I think you had better have a local shop inspect this for a failed engine connecting rod.

My 2000 silhouette oldsmobile turns over but wont start....whats the first thing i should do???

I don't think it has a fuel re-set button. The first thing to do is verify if engine has both spark (ignition) and fuel. Listen for the fuel pump to come on for a couple of seconds when you turn key to ON (not crank). You may have to stand by rear near the gas tank to hear it, while someone turns key on. A hum or a short buzz? With key on, it will only stay on for 2 or 3 seconds to pressurize the system, and then turn off without a cranking signal. If you hear it, the pump is working properly. If not, then a bad fuel pump or the wiring to it is not working correctly.
Check for spark on one or more plugwires when cranking engine, to verify the ignition circuit is working. You can purchase a cheap "spark tester" at a parts store, ground it by its clip, and put the end of plug wire on the tester. When cranking engine, you should observe a good blue spark, meaning your ignition is o.k. If weak or no spark, you will need your ignition diagnosed-could be bad coil, or coil packs, bad ignition module, crank sensor, etc.
If you are getting fuel up to engine, and spark is good, further diagnosis would include checking your injector circuit for injector operation.
Good luck. Post back for further assistance.

My Oldsmobile silhouette 2001 wont start after I replaced the battery and alternator

You can't fix it yourself. It takes a scanner at your Local Dealership to do it. People do it, (new battery) everyday unaware that doing so can and usually does, arm the theft system and either kills the radio or the whole car. To me it's just another built-in defect that requires dealer assistance. It's a buzzkill I know, and it probably won't be long until car owners won't even have access to the engine compartment.

ive had similar problems and it ended up being a bad crank position sensor there are two on the vehicle one by the crank one one the back of the engine about halfway down and halfway across hard to tell which one without having the vehicle so change both if you have to but i would change the back one first hope this helps good luck

2003 Oldsmobile Silhouette ran out of gas,now it won't start HELP

Put the gas in the tank, let everything settle, turn key off, then back on to on position, but NOT start. Let the fuel relay engage the pump and draw some gas pressure. Give it a good minute and it'll start right up.
