Question about 2004 Chevrolet Avalanche

Open Question

My wife tried to shift our 2004 Avalanche into 4 wheel made a lot of noise and then the noise stopped. We went on a short trip and the truck started to make a noise in the transfer case . We had not tried to shift or change the 4 wheel drive selector at all.The noise was not very loud. We had it towed home. I have moved the truck around and still no noise...afraid to go anywhere with it. It has a dead short which kills the battery overnight now.I have been told the problem is the Encoder Sensor. Can you tell me how to dianose it properly.

SOURCE: 99 Silverado 4-wheel drive not engaging

It does not seem that sufficient diagnosis was done. No, you cant give a specific diagnosis like that without tearing unit down. It's likely that they told you the most common failure and left it at that. Likely there is a problem with your unit...I think this becomes more of a trust issue than a mechanical one. A second opinion from an independent reputable shop may help but either way, you need to have it fixed. In not using it much, it makes me wonder how it got worn.
good luck

My truck is stuck in four wheel drive

At the risk of going to the offensive, sometimes it's the simplest thing - you ARE putting it in neutral, at a stop, engine running, with the brake pedal pressed, when trying to shift out of 4wd, yes?

2) Check for blown fuse for 4x4 shift module

3)This sounds dumm, but worked on my wife 99. I took it to a school parking lot, put it in reverse, floored it and pulled on the lever and it popped out of 4x4

4) The shift motor is bad. Replace it.

Hope this helps.

My 04 avalanche makes a clinking noise In front underneath when I hit a bump?

dose it speed up and down when you drivings, it could be you have caught the splash guard onto the brake disc and its catching, if its the wheel baring you need to jack up the side with the wheel still on and turn wheel round check for the sound if now sound, grab wheel at 9 to 3 and shack the wheel feeling for movement should be just a tiny bit with no sound. then do the same at 12 and six if there is a lot of movement the bearing will need replacing same if it makes a clunking sound.

2004 Avalanche will not move in drive. Only revs.

Take your truck to the dealer and describe the problem exactly as you have here. You have an internal transmission problem...and its probably going to be expensive. You can ignore the problem but are chancing further failure as problems generally don't go away or get better. Broken pieces may be floating around in your transmission oil and could create a more expensive repair.

4 wheel drive

i own a 1996 and it's manual says you can shift on the fly with no problem.........if there was a noise accompanying the shift to 4hi i would be concerned but if it just went in and you were able to shift it out with no problems i would not worry
hope this gives you a little peace of mind!
