Turbo refuses to supply power when accelerating. Manual gear changing necessary to attain top (6th) gear.

The car goes in "limp home" mode:
After scanning the Engine Control Module (ECM) with a VAG or similar diagnostic tool you will find this: Fault code: P1557-Turbo Boost pressure control exceeded
1. Engine stopped and ignition switch off. Check all pneumatic connections and hoses between turbocharger actuator = pressure unit for boost-pressure control, boost-pressure control solenoid valve, vacuum reservoir, EGR control solenoid valve, intake-manifold flap solenoid valve, EGR valve with throttle - part of intake manifold. Also the vacuum connection between tandem pump and brake booster. If you find something wrong replace parts. If not go to step 2.
2. Extract the hose of the turbocharger actuator = pressure unit for boost-pressure control part of turbocharger. Instead of the original hose you must place another 1 meter long hose with the same inside diameter, and then you check to inspire yourself the air from the other one extremity of this hose. The mechanical connecting rod of the turbocharger actuator must have a smooth and whole motion. If you can do that with your mouth, then you must replace the boost-pressure control solenoid valve. If you can not reach this with your mouth, then you go to step 3.
3. This is the most difficult work. The problem is that the soot particles deposits inside the turbocharger plugging the variable nozzle geometry mechanism = adjustable vanes of the turbine. If the turbocharger actuator is not able to adjust the turbine vanes the charge air pressure increase too much and ECU (engine control unit) go in "limp mode" = engine protection software. As a result the "limp home" mode engine still running until you turn the engine off (ignition switch off) and back on when the "limp mode" is deactivated, but the fault still remain in ECU memory!
4. You must be able to extract the turbo from the engine and then to disassemble the turbocharger, clean inside adjustable vanes mechanism and refit all.

Black smoke indicates excess fuel during combustion. make sure gate valve on turbo is operating properly as well as having the correct ecm if supplied.

Accelerates/passes very slowly as trans refuses to downshift when in Drive.


I would be looking for a vacuum operated actuator that down shifts when the accelerator is wide open
could be a failing TCM so have the fault codes read first to get an idea of the problem area

Have you checked the PCV system?? If its stuck in the closed position then you will lack power and turbo boost. A vehicle needs 3 things to make it run proper; FUEL,FIRE and AIR. Try that and see if it helps.

I have a 3.1 diesel turbo bighorn and ive giving it o trans service flush filter etc. gear changing is still a little rough and have to apply heavy acceleration for it to change gears when im sitting...


rip it out and fit a manual gearbox is the best bet as i do feel that this gearbox has done its life and it needs a overhaul ,like front clutch relign and new brake bands

Very poor acceleration through all gears


diesel pump might not be working right. Try and check fuel pressure. I dont know if its turbo but if the turbo is failing then you will loose power

Check the turbo to see if you can manually spin it freely, If it does not spin freely or easily, your bearings may be frozen up on turbo

Intermittent power loss after accelerating hard


Sounds like a fuel delivery problem! Try filter first (cheapest), then the pump

Hi,

Assuming no combustion chamber or fuel delivery faults, most turbo diesel engines exhibits this. The delayed is referred to as turbo lag and the smoke is fuel not completely burned since the fuel system tends to be a little rich when the turbo has not attained boosting RPM. Other than to have your injectors cleaned/replaced, the injector pump re-calibrated and/or the turbo checked for leakage, nothing much could really be done. Alternatives are to use fuel additives, re-check of the computer's map/software and/or change of driving habits. The idea is not to floor the accelerator until the turbo has reached the designated RPM where it kicks in.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.
