Thank you for your prompt reply.

I don't think I expressed the original problem correctly....

I can turn the engine on OK and drive the car but after stopping and turning off the ignition I cannot remove the key from the lock and need to press the manual override. This has been occuring for a couple of months. I was wondering if this was an issue with the key battery.

However, in the last week or so the car battery is dead on cold mornings and I need to jump-start the car..

I;m not sure if these are related but do ypu think a new car=battery may solve the problem?

Yes, the battery is flat. If you haven't left a light on check for hidden consumers.

The key is secured with an electromagnet - a safety measure. This electromagnet is very sensitive to the voltage of the car's battery, if it's below 11.5 volts it will not engage leaving the key locked. Check the voltage of the battery, it's not charged enough, either because the battery itself has aged or the alternator is failing - at stop it should be 12v, with the motor running 14.5v.. If the voltages are correct then the electromagnet has failed and it will have to be replaced - complete dismantling of the steering column will be needed, a big job, best left to a shop.

Where the ignition switch lock release of Toyota Avalon 1998 located

It is inside of the steering column at the base of the lock cylinder where you insert your key. They are meant to be an anti theft device and not easy to get around.

Ignition stuck key won't turn to start car!

Gear shift is not totally in the park position - had the same problem with a 2011 Acura TL - a rubber band kept the gear shift lever from totally seating in the park position.

Can't get key out of igntion on my 2004 endeavor

Assuming there's no button to press when taking the key out, try rocking the steering wheel to left and right at the same time as trying to remove the key. Sometimes the ignition lock engages at the same time as the steering lock.

How do you unlock the steering wheel without the keys ? so the car can be toed?

There might be a metal steering wheel lock release button under the dash in the steering column. but im not for sure on that. if you cant release it just get a flatbed tow truck. they will still be able to tow it.

2.Remove steering wheel 1 Clip then a size 13/16th Socket Clocked USE STEERING WHEEL PULLER FOR STEERING WHEEL 3. Use Steering Wheel LOCK RING Press Tool to remove it and its HOLD DOWN CLIP Horn Button & Spring will Come with it
4. Go to Lower Portion if Steering Collun and Disconnect and remove the BLACK Connecter that is Affixed to the Steer Collum
5..Back to the TOP Remove the 3 Screws that Hold the Turn Sygnal Assembly Down
6.Remove the Screw in the Center of the Hazaard Button
7. Remove the 1 Screw Holding Down the Turn Sygnal Lever
8.Now Carfully Pull the Entire Assembly OUT of the Center so as for it to be Out of your Way
9. Look CLOSLY at the Ignition Lock Cylinder Area and Locate Chromed Looking Button
10.. Push this Button While Slightly Pulling on the Ignition Key Lock and Remove Lock. NOTE If Lock seems th NOT want to come out you will need to Insert the IGNITION Key, But I Believe this 1972 Does Not Require the KEY

INSTALATION IS REVERSE PROCEDURE KEEPING A CLOSE EYE ON DETAIL. THIS SHOULDTAKE 2 HOURS
This is Off the Cuff as Most references DO NOT go Back to 1972 And I have Conducted this Procedure Literaly Hundreds of times

Can't remove key from ignition. battery is dead

If the battery is dead, the ignition keys will not release from the ignition. If there is no signal from the transmission shifter that it's in park since the battery is dead, then the ignition lock will not release the keys.  After charging the battery or jumping the blazer to start it and the key's still will not release, try this.
There is a "plunger" as part if the ignition. Under the steering wheel there is a small removable cap that you can take off and put a small screw driver up into and press the plunger in and it will release the key. Good luck and hope this helps, Keep me posted be glad to help.

Key will not turn on 2008 chevy hhr

there are two situations that are close to what you describe.

First, is your key STUCK in the ignition? if so, there's a little panel under the steering column, open that, and feel round under there for the latch to release the key. I don't remember what the dealer SAID the issue was, but it was solved with one of many steering column replacements for a different problem.

If the key goes in and out, but won't turn the cylinder... you may have a bad cylinder, a ruined key(bent? run over by car? goobered up lands? plain worn out?) Or, your steering lock is engaged. If it's the first, that's a mechanic replacment(hopefully dealer covered). The second? get a new key. The third? Hold some tension on the steering wheel and turn the key.

Finally, if your battery is dead, or your solenoid is shot, the key won't turn/release either. Use the stuck key removal method, so you can lock your car while waiting on dealer repair.

2006 Chevy Cobalt - key stuck in ignition;car has basically gone into shutdown mode. Any clue as to what this issue might be?

Went thru this with the neighbor. At the 6:00 position under the column is a plastic panel. Remove it with small screwdriver. Using index finger , press on white plastic button. This releases switch and allows you to remove key. Replace plastic panel.
