Hard starting


This problem can be hard to track down , it could be caused by several thing's ! A bad check valve in the fuel pump letting fuel drain back into the tank , not keeping fuel line pressure up , a crankshaft position sensor can also cause this as well as an ignition control module !

Test the engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor for being shifted in value. Connect a scan tool. Compare the engine coolant temperature against the intake air temperature (IAT) on a cold engine. The ECT and IAT sensor values should be within ?± 3?°C (5?°F) of each other. If the ECT sensor is out of range with the IAT sensor, check the resistance of the ECT sensor. Refer to Temperature Versus Resistance for resistance specifications. Replace the ECT sensor if the resistance is not within the specification. If the sensor is within the specification, repair the ECT signal circuit for high resistance.

Inspect the mass air flow (MAF) sensor installation. A MAF sensor that is incorrectly installed may cause a hard start. Important: The embossed arrows on the MAF sensor indicate the direction of the intake air flow. The arrows must point toward the engine. Install the MAF in the proper direction. The front oxygen sensor sends signals on exhaust gas oxygen content to the PCM to control a 14.7:1 air/fuel ratio under normal driving conditions. The PCM can make fuel corrections from a nominal 128 (0% correction) short/long term fuel trim value to a maximum window of 101-147 (-21 to +15 percent). If the PCM determines a rich condition exists, 02 voltage above 450 mV, it will decrease injector pulse width, reducing fuel, to maintain a 14.7:1 air/fuel ratio. The short term fuel trim value will be between 101-128 indicating a rich condition. If the PCM determines a lean condition exists, 02 voltage below 450 mV, it will increase injector pulse width, adding fuel, maintaining a correct air/fuel mixture. The short term fuel trim value will be between 128-147 indicating a lean condition. When certain conditions have been met to begin learning fuel control (ECT, closed loop, etc.) the PCM will use the short term fuel trim cell to update 1 of the 4 long term cells (idle, decel, cruise, accel) being used. During every drive cycle, or trip, the PCM will use and update the idle and cruise long term cells and will keep track of how long the control system is operating in these cells. After approximately 2 minutes of being in each of these cells, the fuel control system will enable EVAP purge and the purge long term cells will be used. Refer to EVAP Canister Purge for information on purge long term fuel cells. If the average of the idle and cruise fuel cells is 147 and the short term fuel trim cell is currently over 128, a lean fuel system DTC will set. This test is performed before the purge cells are used.

Intermitent starting problems in my 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee


Almost sounds like an injector heat-soak issue... However I'm wired on coffee and Monster at the moment. By not starting for a few days, do you try to start it several times in the interim, or do you just not touch it out of frustration for a few days? You should be able to check for heat-soak the next time it won't start after a drive by pouring a bottle of cool water over the injectors and down the fuel rail. Should cool off the injectors so they work properly again.

Have you checked to see if there are any codes coming from computer? With the key in the ignition, turn it from off to on three times (not all the way to start, ie crank the motor). So you go on-off-on-off-on-off then back to on and leave it there. The check engine light will flash a specific sequence. It may be handy to have a piece of paper in case there's multiple codes given. Basically what you do is count the flashes. They'll come in two-digit sequences, with the digits separated by a small pause. If there are multiple codes, they will be separated by a longer pause. So flash-flash-pause-flash-flash-flash paauuusssee flash-flash-flash-pause-flash-flash-flash would be a 23 and 33 respectively, if that makes sense.

This may help you with trouble-shooting, especially if the computer does give you some codes. Don't worry about Code 12 and Code 55, as 12 is battery/power disconnected within last 50 engine starts (or something like that), and 55 is end of message (ie, no more codes).

2000 mercury grand marquis 4.6 Intermittent problem. 35,000. miles. Problem engine died several times wile driving. Also after car is parked from a drive will not start. Found that the fuel pump is not...


I'd have to test when problem is ongoing. When you first turn on key, no crank, you should hear the pump run for a few seconds then stop. For initial prime, the computer doesn't need rpm signal. Engine cranking, the computer needs to see rpm signal or it won't ground the fuel pump relay. W/o rpm signal, no spark at the plugs and no fuel injector pulse. I know your talking about fuel, but, when problem is ongoing, check spark and fuel injector pulse, engine cranking.
Intermittent problems are a pain, have to test when problem is ongoing.

97 geo metro replaced fuel pump, has new timing belt, gets spark to plugs will run with ether sprayed in carb but wont stay running, has new water pump, new fuel pump relay, ...someone said check the ECM...


The cam sensor controls the injector pulse. No cam signal = no fuel. Also these cars are known for wires chaffing through on the injector harness. If any of the wires are shorted out it will kill all the injectors and result in a no fuel no start situation. Check the wiring first, normally a no cam signal will set a code and a check engine light. Make sure the fuses are good also. Hope this helps.

The ECC sends a signal to the injectors. Based on other engine conditions.

It sounds like that the security system has encountered a problem...Did you notice a light coming on the dash saying security? Your ignition ,all though no chip in key,references to a security module...what this does is tell the computer that the same key is being used to start vehicle...The condition that would come from this problem would be a crank with a know start condition....the security system actually shuts down the injectors if reference signal isnt recognized.POST IF THIS IS THE CONDITION YOU ARE EXPERIENCING>>>

91 camaro 5.0 5sp no injector pulse and no power to fuel pump


Using a multimeter check the wiring for power at the pump and at the relay. It sounds like a bad relay.
