Question about 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt

1 Answer

Have an 05 cobalt with 110,000 mile. Car only moves while in reverse. When in drive or any other gear, the gear does nothing. I can move the shifter freely, but like I said. Unless in reverse, it doesn't go anywhere

The problem with the Cobalt is that it is a closed system, there is no dipstick to check the trans fluid. My car just did this to me also. My check engine light had come on and I had the codes read and the only thing that came up was the O2 sensor, so I changed that and 2 days later I was coming up the lane to the house and my car just stopped moving forward in drive. I am pretty sure I am going to need new trans. My car has 125000 miles on it.

I have all gears but reverse and when in park and neutral and gas pedal is pressed the car moves forward, why?

well could be two things. either your transmission has crapped out on you. or you have a shifter linkage issue. which means when the car is in park its not really in park. try this. move the shifter and see if the car moves in a different gear then what it says it is in . so if it moves in neutral it could be drive and reverse is neutral. if it does not reverse at all. time for a new trany is my guess.

If what your saying is that the shifter will not move into reverse or park, it's a hang-up in your shifter and linkage.

If your saying, when put into reverse, the transmission does nothing, Then you have a trans problem. If the shifter will move to park position and it won't connect the pawl to the stop, that most likely is only adjustment of the shifter cable/linkage. Since you have the other forward gears, I doubt very much it's a problem needing a rebuild.

When I put my gear into Reverse, Netrual and Drive the gear is getting stiff to move. Why is this happening?

If you mean the shifter is getting hard to move, its probably the shift linkage sticking, try a couple squirts of pblaster or other penetrating oil. If the motion of the vehicle is getting hard to drive in reverse and drive the torque converter may be the issue.

Car will not shift into gear

Sounds like a linkage/cable to me. Disconnect the linkage at the transmission and move the shift actuator by hand to see if there is the same things happening. Don't try to do this with the engine running unless someone is holding the brake inside the car.

Gear locks when i park on even a slight incline

ALWAYS engage the Parking Brake BEFORE putting car into "Park". When you want to get out of "Park", put your foot on the brake pedal, move gear shifter into desired gear, THEN take down Parking Brake. If you get stuck (gear shifter doesn't move), then try the "rocking" method (recruit 1 or 2 folks to push your car from behind while you try to move gear shifter into desired gear). Good luck!

Car stops moving in reverse gear

Sounds like the car is just slipping out of gear. Keep your hand on the shifter when you back up next time. See if you can feel the shifter move when the car comes out of gear. If the shifter moves up when it happens keep pressure on the shifter holding it back like you dont want it to move forward. And of course if the shifter moves back when it comes out of gear, put forward pressure on the shifter so it doesnt slip out. This might work for now but but i know i wouldnt want to spen 700 for that ****. Let me know how it goes.

Difficulty putting 2001 S500 into gear

A malfunctioning stop lamp switch can cause this symptom. Another cause can be a bad shifter assembly or gearshifter switch, although when these malfunction its usually permanently failed. The stop lamp switch is located on the brake pedal arm is is fairly easy to replace. You've likely had this long resolved by now, as I have just joined this site. Also, an A-service is basically an oil change with a vehicle inspection and battery test. Harry (master certified MBZ diagnostic tech)
