Use a prybar to separate the halfshaft from the transaxle. Is the inner cv joint still attached, so you can pry against it?

Broke off about an inch and a half of the cv joint were the snap ring fits the tranny and cv on a 2 4 LITER MITSU AUTO 99 Seibring

If the CV shaft broke off in the tranny and the lock ring is still in the tranny then your probably going to have to take your car to a tranny shop because with that snap ring still on it ,it will be hard to get that piece out without taking the tranny apart.

93 ford festiva front end growling and scrapeing noises. sometimes jerks to one side. brakes apear ok. speedometer made these same noises pryer to going out. could it posible be from speedo cable. or out...

Sounds like the CV joint is shot - this is a front-wheel drive car, right. The side that it jumps to has a bad CV bearing that needs to be replaced would be my bet.

If the axle is broke or removed does that mean that the difereincal pin broke or damaged or if the gears are damaged

never seen an axle fall out--you may have major damage. If you are lucky, the cv joint may have failed suddenly without damaging the tranny or wheel bearing. What do the shaft ends look like? Does it have splines on both ends? Are the splines clean? If yes, you may be OK--just have a new axle put in.

Ford festiva cv boots

Depending on mileage and how long you have driven with a damaged boot, it may be a good idea to swap in a new axle ( re manufactured). If you are handy enough to get the axle out, you should be able to get the old joint apart by putting the axle in a vise, cutting off the old boot, and removing the joint from the axle. There are various ways that these are fastened, but generally they are held in place by a circular clip or retaining ring. Check a manual for your specific type of retainer. Once removed, the joint should be completely disassembled and cleaned in solvent, and then reassembled. Then, you still have an old joint, which is why it is faster and easier and better to replace the axle. Good luck. Chip

Replacing cv shafts

-use common sence and block the car up safely before working on it.
-Remove wheel
-Remove large spindle nut on end of axle shaft. (loosen the nut before jacking up the car unless you are using an impact wrench)
-disconnect tie rod from spendle
-disconnect lower ball joint
-push the axle shaft through the spendle and pull the spendle unit aside. hold out of the way with mechanics wire.
-pull axle shaft out of transaxle (it may be necessary to use a pry bar inbetween the transaxle and inner cv joint. be carefull not to crack the transaxle housing) it should just pull straight out.
