Question about Chevrolet Monte Carlo

2 Answers

I have a 2000 Monte Carlo that is giving me an EGR Valve Sensor code. It does not effect how the car runs at all but it is going in for an emissions test. Not sure if it will cause it to fail. As I said it does not effect how the car runs at all.

Yes, if you live in CA, any trouble code will cause you to fail. Your valve is shown below and the position sensor is integrated into the valve. A new valve is $75. The problem could be in the wiring, but most likely it's the valve. Please let me know if you have any questions, and thanks for using FixYa.

Engine light code p0455 chev monte carlo

Hello,The problem is that the EVAP system is not able to achieve or maintain vacuum during the diagnostic testThe control module tests the evaporative emission (EVAP) system for a large leak. The control module monitors the fuel tank pressure (FTP) sensor signal to determine the EVAP system vacuum level. When the conditions for running the test are met, the control module commands the EVAP canister purge solenoid valve OPEN and the EVAP canister vent solenoid valve CLOSED . This allows engine vacuum to enter the EVAP system. At a calibrated time, or vacuum level, the control module commands the EVAP canister purge solenoid valve closed, sealing the system, and monitors the FTP sensor input in order to determine the EVAP system vacuum level. If the system is unable to achieve the calibrated vacuum level, or the vacuum level decreases too rapidly, the PCM will set the code you now have. So, you either have a stuck open purge valve, a stuck open vent valve, a false reading fuel tank pressure sensor, or a cracked/broken EVAP line.

That slushy brown stuff is signs of a blown head gasket. Have a code scanner hooked up to find out why the light is on, it will probably show coolant temperature sensor. Just out of curiosity, check the pvc valve (if your car has one), and see if it's clogged. If it is replace it, the crank case is not getting ventilated.

2000 monte carlo ss 3800 series engine sometimes stalls while driving, after putting trans in neutral it starts as soon as you hit the key,no codes come up on the computer either when this happens.

3800's are really good motors, but that's a sign of fuel injector problems. I've seen this all to many times. Run some injector cleaner through it and see if cleans up.

One question however, does it stall out and have a problem restarting? Black smoke out of the exhaust? This is sign of an EGR valve problem that may be fixable simply with a nice cleaning.

I'd try the injector cleaner first, and if it continues, go onto the EGR valve. If this shows no problem, it may be a good time to take the car to a mechanic and have the injectors tested. They may be failing but not giving out a fault indicator.
