Question about 1992 Volvo 740

I have a 1992 740 non turbo wagon with 104k the cars heat level on the dash has always been at about the middle never going past the middle, however yesterday when driving the car after about 30 minute i noticed the needle moving up and the fan came on when i started to drive the needle came back to the middle it happen a couple more times that day but has not happened again.also when i turned the car of that day the needle stayed almost all the way. it looked to me like the car almost over heated. it takes me about 30 minutes to get to work and the the past to days this has not happed again. What can be the problem.

Most of the cars made for Europe are equipped with a( thermostat ) but don`t confuse it with air conditioner thermostat or thing is working like valve that stops water circulating in cold starts so the water will only circulate around the engine block not through the radiator and of coarse it helps heat up your car`s engine faster but the problem comes when that valve got old (by the way most of those valves working as a wax capsule when the water heats to some amount the wax molten so it opens the way for water to circulate through the radiator ) what happens is simply the wax looses some of its function and molten in higher temp . so it block the water again until it heats up to molt the wax my advice : get off that part and just don`t replace it if you found it pricey for you your car still working but will needs more time to warm up i hope i was useful for u sir .

  • The 1.8L non turbo engine requires 3.4 quarts of 5 W 40 full synthetic (according to manufacturer specs) Always makes sure to start the vehicle after the oil change for a few seconds and shut it off, wipe the dipstick once and re-check the oil level it to make sure.

Replaced broken water pump, replaced thermostat, and the temperature gauge consistently sits just below red once it's warmed up. It never seems to go into the red if I'm idling or taking short trips, but...


hi the temp gauge should sit in the lower quarter of the gauge, it has to be a faulty water temp sensor as anything else would cause it to over heat badly

In general, the answer is yes. I have not changed one in quite a while but almost always you have to lift the engine to get the oil pan off. You need the oil pan off to loosen the main bearing caps.

1990zx non turbo, car doesnt always shift out of first gear.


Check fluid level first. The throttle position sensor could be faulty or misadjusted.It should be .4 - .5 volts when fully closed and 4.0 volts wide open throttle.
Next check line pressure. Line pressure at idle in drive should be 61 - 67psi.
If the line pressure is ok it will be an internal problem.

WOW... It'd take a book's worth of instructions on here to answer your question. Which is why I would recommend that you purchase a repair manual specific to your model. It should give you all the info you need for these jobs and for future jobs as well. I always buy one for each vehicle that I plan to keep a while... they aren't that expensive and really pay for themselves in the long haul.
