Question about 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee

1 Answer

I have been having a problem with my 2003 Jeep GC. The original alternator went out about a year ago and I got a replacement from advanced auto. Worked OK for about 4 months and died again. Took it back and they checked it and it was not putting out anything. So far I have had to replace 3 alternators. Each one checked bad at the store. It is getting crazy changing the alternator every other month or so. Has anyone had a problem like this and what could be causing the alternators to die?

You may have a short in it somewhere, i had a small short and it fried my alternator within a week. check all wiring very close. if there is a after market stereo or something else, it may be over heating from working so hard. check wires for corrosion and a bad fusable link in wire.

Need diagram to replace vacuum lines on a 1981 Jeep Grand Cherokee

sorry there were no GC until 1993, so post real car, and real year, and model. is this a typo, 2001 ????
which engine? we cant guess that.
or your country, is this and EXPORT JEEp, the FSm has many pages, usa, and export for each engine, not one that i can guess, unstated.
the under hood had a vacuum map, but in 1981, ahhhhhhhh, not sure. (open hood look up and under see EPA vac, map)
1981 is a carb, good luck fixing carbs. huh, finding kits on some are H3LL on earth today, for some engines.
our free books go back to 1993 only
why not (best advice there is) get the 1981 FSM used off Ebay
and have all the answers, ok?

repost real car and we can get any diagram with engine and country stated (usa or export)
is this a AMC car, and a real JEEP?
AMC invented the first Cherokee and no GC EVER.

read the wiki on GC (quote)
The Grand Cherokee's origins date back to 1983 when American Motors Corporation (AMC) was designing a successor to the smaller Jeep Cherokee (XJ).[3] Three outside (non-AMC) designers-Larry Shinoda, Adam Clenet, and Giorgetto Giugiaro-were also under contract with AMC to create and build a clay model of the Cherokee XJ

Won't start, battery good, starter good, swapped relays and still won't start

Any issues with the ignition switch itself? They are mostly made of plastic pieces. With the exception of the actual cylinder. Also depending on how long you had the battery issue,it may have damaged the alternator. They tend to go hand in hand, unless caught early enough. The alternator gets overworked due to the weak battery.

Take it to autozone or advance auto they will tell you what the code is for free but more than likely it's an oxygen sensor that needs replaced 9 outta 10 times that's what a check engine light is on for

if it shakes over 50 miles per hour, it could be your front tires need balancing. and check your ball joints while you are at it. or king pins if it has that. (they are different from ball joints but serve the same purpose.)

Replacing alternater. jeep

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the drive belt.
  3. If necessary, remove any splash shielding for easier access to the alternator
  4. Tag and disengage the alternator wiring. It may be necessary to remove the alternator and mounting bracket from the vehicle as an assembly.
  5. If equipped, remove the front alternator assembly mounting plate.
  6. Unfasten the alternator mounting and pivot bolts and remove the alternator.
  7. If installing the original alternator assembly, push out the pivot bushing as illustrated.
These are the removal instructions per Chilton's Auto repair guide. Here is a link to help replace the drive belt when you're done. Just insert the year, make, model and engine to get the belt part number and the "Routing diagram".
Best of luck on your repair.
