Question about GMC Sierra 1500

Ignition module located inside of the distributor, for 1989 gmc 1500 350 4x4 . truck is getting fuel in throddle body and turning over , but no spark

    thanks this is just what i was needing guides to a solution. i will try and let you know what the problem was i think the distributor is it .

If your engine cranks normally but will not start because it has no spark, or it stalls and won't restart because it has no spark, the problem may be due to any of the following:

1) A bad pickup inside the distributor ,a stripped distributor drive gear (common problem with plastic distributor drive gears), broken, loose or corroded wires from the pickup to the ignition module or PCM.

2) A bad crankshaft position (CKP) sensor or broken, loose or corroded wires from the sensor to the PCM.

3) A bad ignition module or A bad ignition coil .

4) A bad rotor or distributor cap (cracks or carbon tracks that are allowing the spark to short to ground)

5) Faulty ignition switch.

You can also do a test to confirm the problem .The procedure to do the test is as follows:---

If your engine has spark plug wires, disconnect one of the plug wires from a spark plug and place the end of the wire near a metal surface on the engine. Then insert a small Phillips screwdriver into the end of the wire (the plug boot), or a small bolt or nail to provide a conductive path. Then crank the engine and look for a spark to jump from the screwdriver, bolt or nail in the end of the plug wire to the engine. If you do not see a spark, there is an ignition problem.

OR-----------

If your engine has a coil-on-plug ignition system with no plug wires, In that case remove one of the coils from the spark plug and insert an old spark plug, a spark plug tester or a screwdriver into the end of the coil. Ground the spark plug or plug tester to the engine, then crank the engine and look for a spark. No spark indicates an ignition problem.

Possibilities to be checked in this problem are as follows:--


If the engine has no spark, check for voltage at the coil positive terminal when the ignition key is on. If NO voltage, then problem is on the trigger side of the coil (pickup, crank sensor, ignition module or primary wiring circuit).

But If there is NO voltage at the coil itself, then in that case the problem is on the supply side (the ignition switch or ignition wiring circuit).

But if the coil has voltage, then problem may be a bad high voltage output wire from the coil to the distributor, hairline cracks in the coil output tower, or cracks or carbon tracks inside the distributor cap or on the rotor.------Getting this all possibilities checked will point towards the exact faulty part which is to be replaced.----------
Sounds like the ignition module in the distributor.To replace ignition module distributor has to be replaced.The ignition module is part of the distributor. 1989 chevys10blazer won't start turns over but won't start one mechanic said it jumped time another one said ignition. Coil or distributor cap put gas in carburetor but it still didn't start


Pull off a spark plug wire and ground it over the engine. Crank the engine over and see if there is any spark from the wire. Sounds as if there is no spark to light the fuel you are putting in the carb. If no spark, possible ignition module/pick up coil inside the distributor/defective distributor cap/rotor/ignition coil/ wiring

1995 GMC Sierra won't start! Just spins! Changed the fuel pump, fuel filter, Distributor cap and a few other things. What else could it be?


Does the car have spark? After replacing all these parts and no spark i would replace the ignition module located in the distributor

2001 safari no start just cranks. Was cranking a little hard for about 3 weeks not real bad.then started car ran ok Then today just cranks no start sprayed car cleaner in the air cleaner intake did not...


Check the classic symtoms here, first make sure the engine is getting fuel and spark. Make sure your distributor module is not bad, it is located inside your distributor. Next make sure your coil pak is not faulty. Also look at your ignition relays to make sure they are not blown. Also check ignition fuses. If all these tests prove ok and you have a distributor instead of a coil pak then check the wires to the module inside the distributor for slight wear marks on them that sometimes happens when the wires rub on the metal turning shaft in the distributor cap.

Truck will turn over but not start. Checked fuel flow up to injectors, all good but injectors were not spraying into throttle body. Changed Coil, wires, battery, fuel filter...even with all the adjustments...


The ignition module located inside of the distributor is what generates the signal that the ECM (Engine Control Module) uses to time and fire the fuel injectors, as well as the signal to run the fuel pump and the dwell signal timing to fire the ignition coil. A faulty ignition module can cause any one of these systems to malfunction.

That does sound like a malfunction with the ignition module inside of the distributor, and you can remove the ignition module and have it tested for free at most auto part stores.

If you do purchase a new ignition module be sure that it does come with a silicone grease or a die-electric compound because it is a heat sink and the ignition module will burn up without it.

To install the new ignition module first clean out the mounting surface inside of the distributor. Then completely coat the metal contact surface under the ignition module with a thick coat the silicone grease or die-electric compound and do not leave any of the metal contact surface of the ignition module un-coated with the silicone grease or die-electric compound, and be very careful not to over-tighten the ignition module or it will be damaged.

If all the above is as you described it, and the battery is good and the engine will crank over, then it sounds like a faulty control module.

1989 F150 WITH 5.0LITER RUNS FOR AWHILE THEN SHUTS OFF. WHEN IT COOLS AWHILE IT WILL RUN FOR A SHORTER PERIOD AND SHUT OFF AGAIN. I HAVE CHANGED FUEL FILTER, DISTRIBUTOR CAP AND ROTOR AND IGNITION CONTROL...


If it doesn't have any spark when cranking over after it has died then I would look at replacing the ignition pick-up coil located inside the distributor. If it does have spark you may have a fuel pump that quits pumping fuel as the pump heats up. I'd check for spark first but I have put a number of fuel pumps in these over the years also.

1989 GMC engine turns great , no spark at coil or plugs, had coil tested and repalced- new rotor and cap. not sure where to go next


Check your fuses (ECM) and also recheck your wire leads to the coil. Your ICM (ignition control Module) may also be bad, it's located in your distributor under the rotor. You can have that tested also to make sure it's working 100%, there common to go bad from corrosion caused by condensation under the distributor cap.

Throttle body injectors not fiering but there is fuel pressure


the injectors are fired thru the engine cotrol module but it gets its signal to fire from the pick-up located inside the distributor if you are loosing injector pulse only the ignition module is bad if you are also loosing spark when you loose injector pulse your pick up is causing the problem if you replace the pick-up i recomend you change the ignition module when doing so because they work together and you have to remove the distributor to change the pick-up

Wont start


Make sure that you're getting spark. A very common thing on these engines are coils going bad. If you can verify spark, check to make sure you have an injector pulse. As you rotate the engine, look inside of the throttle body and make sure that you see fuel pulsing into the engine. You can still have good pressure but you don't have an injector pulse, the fuel still cant get into the engine. You can use a test light as well to test for an injector pulse. One wire going to the injector will have constant power and the other will blink when the engie is rolled over. Does it start if you spray starting fluid into the throttle body? If it does, it's a fuel delivery problem. Again be sure you have spark from coil to distributor and plugs. You can remove the ignition module and take it to NAPA and they have a module tester. Have them test the module several times not just once. This will eliminate the possibilites of an intermitted problem. Let me know how it does. tiqautoperformance@live.com
