Assuming it is really an '86, I'd start with the ignition. Specifically check that the plugs and wires are in good condition and attached!
Looking at the engine compartment in the dark (really, really dark) while running can show up carbon tracking and spark "leaks" as you will see the flashes.
Could also be the timing as a loose distributor can "walk."
Could also be the cap or rotor (cracked or carbon tracks).

Maybe the fuel system is dirty? run some fuel system cleaner with your gas and it should fix the problem

You should try to solve the cylinder problem first. I would start with a compression test to see whats going on. When did you last do a tune up; plugs, wires etc. The "cat" is probably plugged up from all the excess hydrocarbon buildup due to #8 not firing. If you can fix the cylinder problem, the "cat" may get cleaned out with some highway driving. Good luck.

Have a 2001 Monte Carlo SS that seems to run great usually, but will periodically die while driving and may or may not start right away. It will also sometimes not start for up to a half-hour, cranking...

check the connector on the crankshaft sensor, you have classic symptoms of either a failing crank sensor or, more likely, a dirty/bad connector or harness.

I have a 1992 Vw jetta. 1.8L 8 valve. Last night i left work it seemed a little spotty on the acceleration like it was getting tugged by somthing. ran fine one the express way but when i was getting off...

I would check the pick up coil in the distributor, and the control module, mounted under the drives side cowl, by the windsheild wipers, mounted on a silver heat sink.

Either you threw a belt or the water pump isnt not circulating. You can drive to the shop. Just becareful. When you see it getting hot shut er down and let er cool. If you get it too hot you could cook the motor.
