Question about 1986 Volkswagen Wagon Camper
Assuming it is really an '86, I'd start with the ignition. Specifically check that the plugs and wires are in good condition and attached!
Looking at the engine compartment in the dark (really, really dark) while running can show up carbon tracking and spark "leaks" as you will see the flashes.
Could also be the timing as a loose distributor can "walk."
Could also be the cap or rotor (cracked or carbon tracks).

Maybe the fuel system is dirty? run some fuel system cleaner with your gas and it should fix the problem
