Your mechanic is correct, we do see this quite often on the chevy trucks, if you choose not to repair it the brakes will still work just fine but you will not have any anti-lock system. so if you are on wet or slick pavement and need to stop in a hurry the wheels could lock up an as long as the wheels are locked you will not have any control of the truck, that is why they came out with anti-lock to give you more control will braking.

Buy the Module & install yourself, if you know
that is the problem

Don't use it regardless of what your told
Not dangerous, is not always true on some vehicles

Can not go to inspection with any OBD light or
systems not in ready state

Get a second evalutation ,& install yourself.

If it is the electrical module you won't have any problem

If it is the hydraulic part you just bleed the brakes with
the engine running.

Well, if you are in the snow/rain ABS is a good thing to have. He may be saying that running without ABS is fine because lots of cars do not have it (like my 2006 mercury milan) so he is thinking that it is not imperative that you get it fixed. I think you should get it fixed. Try shopping around and getting a better price since you know what you need done. I think 1000$ is steep so try calling around.

Or do it yourself and buy the part at an auto parts store or on ebay.

The ABS light on my 2002 Toyota Avalon is on,speedometer's not working & the transmission shifts poorly. Our mechanic said it needs an ABS control module. Would the ABS module cause those symptoms?

I would have a scanner hooked up and look at the signal from the Vehicle speed sensor before replacing the outrageously expensive ABS unit.

How to disable abs light

The ABS light normally illuminates to indicate that the ABS module is out of parameter, which may indicate a POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS CONDITION. Usually, replacing the ABS module will cure the condition, and the ABS warning light will turn off.

ABS LIGHT IS ON - TO REPLACE MODULATOR, THEY WANT 1000 FOR THE PART. ONLY 150 FOF LABOR. CAN I FIND PART CHEAPER ?

Which type is it? The brick type or tubular type? (Not technical names, just descriptive)
Tubular types run a little under a 1000 online..
See this example..

I think you have this type - runs 6 - 700 online . These are not OEM (originals) these are replacements.

ABS light on as well as the check engine light. I have had a mechanic tell me that the ABS computer module needs to be replaced but he wants 1000 bucks to do it. Any cheaper repairs available? Sandy

There may be a shop out where you live that may to this cheaper but you would need to locate them, maybe try asking if they would use a used module from a junk yard, also how about a secound shop checking it out maybe it not the module,

The ABS control Module is going bad, that all, since the ABS and traction work together you will get both lights on. Take to a mechanic, expect to spend about $500.

Abs light appeared on dashboard display for the first time tonight. Not sure what to do and is it likely to cost alot of money

the ABS light of course is warning u that the ABS has developed a fault and has been disabled by the ABS control module, the only way to find out what is wrong and how much it is going to cost to repair is having the dealer test the system for the trouble code that is set in the control modules memory whenever this light is turned on. Right now u have just regualr brakes, no ABS function.

Here is a Problem for you all! 2000 Grand Am GT ram air v6 ABS and Brake light always on, No trouble codes, and no rear brakes at all key on or off. Has fluid at M/C and to ABS unit but not from unit to...

This problem sounds like and ABS module that has gone bad, the ABS module has toothed gears inside that actuate the ABS motor, if one of these gears slips a tooth or "unwinds" itself if will not circulate brake fluid to where it needs to go (ex: the rear brakes) alot of times the brake and ABS light will come on, but will not set any trouble codes. My recommendation is to take this to a repair shop and have them verify the problem and replace the ABS module, the motor gears have to be properly aligned when replacing or the lights will stay on and you will still have the same problem. Hope this helps.
