Question about 1996 Honda Accord

1 Answer

I have an automatic 1996 Honda Accord LX (don't know the engine size but it's not a V6) with about 200,000 miles on it. It's been a great car and I commute to and from school 5 days a week with it, about 120 miles a day. At the end of last week, I had extensive work done by a mechanic I've been taking my car to for 7ish years - timing belt & water pump replacement, radiator replacement, fixing some oil leaks, front brakes, roters - $1700 worth of work. On my way home from the mechanic (he's in another town, so I had driven ~50 miles), my car died in the middle lane of a highway during stop and go traffic. Once it was loaded onto the tow truck, we could clearly see the large puddle of oil in the highway and that the oil pan cap was missing - !!! I just got off the phone with them and they admit that it was something they caused. They said the engine "has damage" and that they would be replacing the CAM free of charge for me and that this "should" repair the problem. Is there anything else I should ask about or be concerned about? Do you guys really think this will solve the problem or am I entering a whole world of future car issues? What would you do?? Thanks for any help you can offer.

Thanks for choosing FixYa and welcome. First, sorry about your luck. It sounds like you have had some bad luck my friend. Hope it gets better. Here is the thing, If the cap was missing, that is how the oil came out of course. I wasn't sure if that was the case. If so, it is hard telling what is damaged if it was running with or little oil. The Cam is probably damaged, but the entire engine may be damaged, at the least, some other things more then likely, You may have cracked a head also. It is really hard to tell without looking at it personally, but it is possible that the engine may be shot. All I can really say is let them fix it for free. But, don't be surprised if it is something else. I hate to say that, but I am just being honest. The oil is the blood of the engine. Without it, certain parts die. The best advice I can give you is keep all documentation. Seven years, you know if you can trust them or not. That may be all they need. But keep all paper work just in case. You would be surprised how a car can be rigged to drive a few miles just to get them out the door. It happens. Without taking the engine apart, you just can't know 100% what all is wrong. It could have warped the engine, valves, pistons, rods, ect. Remember, they caused it. Not you. If you get it back and it acts up, take it back asap. Hope your luck gets better. Best regards. Ricky

why do you thin that, hondas are a zero tolerance engine so damage will likely occur, when was the timing belt done, they should be done no later than 100,000 miles.newer cars 60,000 miles
