Question about 1999 Oldsmobile Cutlass

1 Answer

Replaced anti-theft module P/N XTP 31419, in 1999 Olds Cutlass. Turned on ignition, waited 10 minutes, then started car! All ok for two days! Then, the same starting problem again. Car starts and shuts down in a few seconds! Does the new module, from NAPA, need to be programed by a dealer? Or what? Thank you, Peter

Are you scanned the PCM (Powertrain Control Module) to know is some fault code is stored there? did you check to make sure the wiring was OK at the PCM? No cuts or broken wiring.

One soft reset mayeb could help; the unfortunate problem is that unless you have access to a scantool and computer there is little you can do on these newer antitheft systems. The vehicle likely needs the password XXXXX or programmed unless you have been using a spare key. Try using the key that you know for sure has started it in the past, if you try using some of the spare keys, they are only for door locks or trunk. Anyhow feel free to ask me any questions regarding this but there is little I or anyone else can do unless you have a gm scantool, so you may have to get it towed to the local GM dealer unless the dealership will send someone over to you to help, sometimes they do this since it does not take long. I'll provide the reprogram instructions just to show you:

10-Minute Relearn Procedure
Important: Use only a master key when performing the first relearn procedure. If a valet key is used first, the TDM will not allow additional keys to be learned.

Use this procedure after replacing any of the following components:
• The vehicle keys.
• The TDM.

Important: When replacing a TDM with a GM SPO Replacement Part, ensure the procedure to setup a new theft deterrent module is performed prior to the 10-minute relearn procedure.
Connect a scan tool to the vehicle.
Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
Ensure that all power consuming devices are turned OFF on the vehicle.
With a scan tool, select Request Info. under Service Programming System and follow the scan tool on-screen instructions.
Disconnect the scan tool from the vehicle and connect the scan tool to a Techline Terminal with the current Service Programming System (SPS) software.
On the Techline Terminal, select Service Programming System and follow the Techline Terminal on-screen instructions. Ensure the correct programming selection is chose based on component being replaced or programmed. For this procedure, choose the Vehicle Theft Deterrent menu selection.
Disconnect the scan tool from the Techline Terminal and re-connect the scan tool to the vehicle.
With a master vehicle key, turn ON the ignition with the engine OFF.
With a scan tool, select Program ECU under Service Programming System.
At this point the scan tool must remain connected for the duration of the 10-minute relearn procedure.

Important:
• The scan tool will initially display 12 Minutes. The first 2 minutes allow the scan tool to initialize the appropriate control module. The remaining 10 minutes is the relearn timer.
• On some vehicles the security indicator may be illuminated for the duration of the 10-minute relearn procedure.

Observe the scan tool, after approximately 10 minutes the scan tool will display "Programming Successful, Turn OFF Ignition". The vehicle is now ready to relearn the key information and/or the passwords on the next ignition switch transition from OFF to CRANK.
Turn OFF the ignition and wait 2 minutes.
With a master vehicle key, turn the ignition to the RUN position for 15 seconds, then start the vehicle. The TDM has now learned the key transponder information and the ECM has learned the fuel continue password.
With a scan tool, clear any DTCs.

Hope helps.

2000 grand am security light comes on can i bypass that with remote start

Are you the one who bought the vehicle new ? Replaced ignition switch or the ignition lock cylinder ? No , sorry, but a remote start will not by pass anti-theft system .

The vehicle theft deterrent system is designed in order to prevent vehicle theft by disabling the fuel injectors unless the lock cylinder is correctly engaged by a mechanical key. The theft deterrent system uses the following 4 components for theft prevention:
• The lock cylinder
• The ignition switch
• The body control module (BCM)
• The powertrain control module (PCM)
When starting the engine, the PCM searches for a password from the BCM through the Class 2 serial data circuit. If the password is not recognized or not present, the PCM will disable the engine. Two modes of tamper detection are provided:
No password received
The engine will start and stall quickly. SECURITY telltale will flash on the instrument panel cluster (IPC) and then stay ON steady.
Incorrect or disable password received (More than 3 invalid passwords are received)
The engine is disabled for at least 10 minutes and the SECURITY telltale will illuminate solid on the IPC during the 10 minutes.
After the vehicle has passed theft detection, the PCM will continue normal operation.

Anti-thief system cut off power to den gine an won't cut it back on

If you are dealing with the anti theft the anti theft will flash as you are trying to start the vehicle if this is the case then it is the anti theft if not then you are not dealing with a ant theft issue. You can do a 30 minute relearn procedure without a scan tool. here is how Turn ignition on without the engine reunning.attempt to start the vehicle then release the key to ON.(vehicle doest start) Observe the security light.afeter 10 minutes the security light will turn off.Turn off the ignition and wait 5 seconds.do this 3 times for 30 minutes. start the engine with the engine started the vehicle will learn the passlock key.

Replaced ignition switch in 1999 chevy cavaliar rs, anti-theft light comes on and stays on and won't allow car to start and remain on or run

You have to do a relearn procedure on the anti-theft system:

Attempt to start the vehicle. Leave the ignition on until the THEFT SYSTEM indicator turns off (about 10 minutes). Turn the ignition switch off. Leave the ignition switch off with key in for about 10 minutes. Attempt to start vehicle.

Ignition keeps going into security car starts then stalls and security idiot light flashes

ignition switch problems on these cars are notorious, you can bypass the anti-theft module by placing a resistor inline so that the module 'thinks' the correct key is not an attempt to steal the car. the anti theft is located behind the glovebox and the resistor costs 15 cents at radio shack, not as hard to do as it sounds and it fixes it for good.

With the car RUNNING cut the yellow wire to the ignition switch from the group of three wires.
Make sure the car is RUNNING when the wire is cut.
Tape the ends and thats it.....the car will start first time from now on....as long as you don't mind not having anti theft.

1996 Oldsmobile Achieva: Security light flashes upon startup

Here is what you do, but only when the SECURITY light flashes - if it is always ON or OFF it's no use.
Turn the key in the ignition to ON.
Wait for exactly 10 minutes ( SECURITY light will flash for 10 minutes and then stay on SOLID)
Turn the key to OFF
Wait 5 seconds.
Turn the key in the ignition to ON.
Wait for exactly 10 minutes.
Turn the key to OFF
Wait 5 seconds.
Turn the key in the ignition to ON.
Wait for exactly 10 minutes.
Turn the ignition OFF.

Start the car normally.
It has relearnt the keycode and you're good to go.
NOTICE - it takes 30 minutes to relearn, that's THREE cycles of ON - 10 minutes - OFF.

Good luck.

I Have A Seville 1990, When That Happen To Me I Got The Inginion
Replaced Problem Solved. What Is Happening Is Your Key Has A Chip And That Chip Is A Resister And When The Valve Is Not Sented To The Computer It Disengages the Fuel Pump And Than Tells You To Wait. Soon All That Will Happen Is You Will Get The Wait 3 Mins And It Will Never Start, A Good Locksmith Can Take Care Of This For You And That Will Save You Some Money. Cause If You Go To The Dealer Ouch They Will Hit You Up. But I Asure This Is How It Will Happen Cause It Is How It Happen To Me
And Sorry There Is No By Passing The Computer
