Question about 2002 Ford F250 Super Duty SuperCab

2002 ford f250 5.4L auto with OD wire chaffed. so i bought new shifter with wire replaced still does not work. all fuses are good. mechanic on here said instrument cluster is bad. i bought a new one for $1500 still not working. anyone know why?

Hello, I believe I would hang onto the receipt for the new cluster, that's a pretty expensive guess if it is a wrong guess. In the future, for a part like a gauge cluster, there are both rebuilt Certified clusters and also Salvage parts from wrecks and disabled trucks. Would have needed to know if all gauges were dead.

You may only need a PCM Relay in the Powerbox or a PCM.. The PCM is the brain for the powertrain. Each Relay has several terminals within it and half could be burned out while the other half of the Relay can still work. The Relays are interlinked via the hard terminals on them and 1 burned out terminal can fail to trip another Relay and fail to switch it on.

The PCM is a programmable device. A temporary short can wipe the memory. The memory is wiped when you reprogram one anyway, so you need to have the PCM checked to see if it is blank. A process called "Reflashing" is done to put the new instructions back inside the PCM. If the old PCM will not communicate, the Relay for it may not be supplying power. If the PCM is receiving power, it may be blank or burned out.

I was told that Advance autoparts has more testing equipment that other major chains don't. So a bench check may help you. Sorry that your other solution from this site did not work yet. Fixya is all internet and I would not know the other mechanic to say anything about your case.

I hope my solution is very helpful and I would like to know if it was a Relay or not. Thanks for using Fixya.

You need a Repair shop capable of reading and "Reflashing" the PCM.

The most common reason on the ford truck of the overdrive not working is due to the wiring to the switch, if its on the shifter then check the wires running to the switch, remove the column covers and check for broken wire and also check all the fuses as that the wires may be chaffed and ground out agaist metal column and pop fuse, this is where i would start, good luck.

2003 ford explorer, no dash lights, no power windows, no guage readings, no radio. fuses seem good


look in the power distribution box under the bonnet ,their are some big 60+ amp fuses in their doubt if any blown but a dirty connection is a high probability

Cannot disengage overdrive on 2003 Ford F150 4.2L


Check the Fuse for the OD function, this is cab fuse panel fuse #29, 5A.
If This fuse is blown, chances are the wires at the end of the shift lever are chaffed and causing the problem. This happens some times ( can't say why ), but it is simple enough to check and repair the wires if the insulation is chaffed.

The light on my overdrive button doesn't come on, but it also doesn't take my engine out of overdrive. Is this still a fuse related issue?


The OD off switch is powered by the cab fuse panel, Fuse #29 ( 5A ).
If this fuse is blown, could be chaffed wires at the base of the gear shift lever, where they turn out of the chrome tube( behind the plastic cover ).
Without this fuse working, the PCM cannot be signaled to take the truck out of OD, so it could just be the fuse causing the issue. Please add a comment on what you find on the fuse.

Remove the shroud around the steering column and shifter and look closly at the wires coming out of the shifter at the pivot of the shifter, if its not to bad you can tapeit and reposition it and be good to go.

I replaced the shifter knob with the od button but it doesn't....


I bought a 1996 Ford Explorer. I just got my transmission rebuild and it still seems like my car not picking up the speed properly? also the overdrive light constantly blinking when I drive sometimes. Do you have an idea about what the promblem might be?

Sounds like your auto shifter handle has a short in it. If the od lamp does not light up when pushed you have a short. You can try repairing the wiring or replace shifter handle.

Automatic trany will not come out of overdrive


sorry only ever seen a manual here in spain but it sounds like a solonoid is gummed up underneath,where it would be i dont know .

My overdrive light is flashing indicating the overdrive is off


this could mean there is a problem with the transmission,but most times when OD light is flashing it is because the wiring to the OD switch is broken.
is the OD switch on the end of the gear shift lever ?
or does your vehicle have the shifter on console between seats ?

2002 F350 Superduty 7.3L Diesel/Auto transmission


You should check the wiring for the gear shift. Sometimes the wires rub through on the top and it causes a short.F2.45 is a 10a fuse in fuse box located in the cab. It controls all three of your concerns. Hope this helps, Good Luck.
