Question about 1999 GMC Yukon

1 Answer

I have a 1999 yukon that keeps having fuel delivery issues. I sometimes have to put gas in the carburetor just to start it. It will run for about 30 secs and then starts to choke. It then dies on me. It almost sounds like it is backfiring. Also, when this is happening, I'm giving it gas or trying to, and it doesn't do anything. Do I need to replace my fuel filter or could it be the timing belt?

Sounds like a weak fuel pump.Check the fuel pressure it should be 60-66 psi with key on and engine off.If its below 52 then it does not have enough pressure to open the popit valve in the injector to allow fuel thru.

Hey Christine , sounds like a fuel delivery issue... could be the fuel filter, the tank line is clogged, the carburetor is dirty..(the needle and seat may need to be replaced...(this controls the flow of gas into the carb)..any professional small engine shop can fix it..
This is not unusual...not to worry..

Truck wont start after running out of gas put gas in 3 different times from gas can wont statt

Have you tried listening to see if you can hear the fuel pump run?

Try pounding on the bottom of the gas tank with the palm of your hand. Sometimes that can jar the fuel pump enough to get it to run.

You can also try putting a small amount of fuel in the throttle body and see if it starts. It won't run long but, if it starts, you know you have a fuel delivery problem.

you may have a blown fuse check them first and the relay for the fuel pump just swap it with a new one if those are good spray starting fluid into the throttle body if the car runs the fuel pump went bad if you ran out of gas each time that happened it did damage to the fuel pump because the gas cools off the fuel pump while it operates so on an old car that's 16 years old if it happened a few times in it's life span it did damage each time this also could be just from age related failure but when you get a new pump always keep enough gas in the tank so it will keep the pump cooled off the pump is an electrical motor and they generate heat from operation the gas keeps it cold when the pump gets to hot it has to shut down for safety reasons to avoid an explosion and it fry's itself the other thing that could be wrong is you had a lot of dirt in the tank & the filter is clogged up check all the simple things first before you spend$$$$$$ for a fuel pump

You do not have a carburetor. It is a throttle body injection system. The coolant temperature sensor, oxygen sensor, map sensor and throttle position sensor all have to do with the fuel delivery. The ECM (computer/brain) collects information from these sensors and adjusts the fuel accordingly. Hold the throttle wide open and try to start it. Have your diagnostic codes read and make sure you put in the correct ECM for your vehicle. Check your fuel return line and your air filter.

My 96 yukon wil not start. Sounds like it will crank over but won't. It is not the fuel. I changed the ignition coil still won't start.

try spraying some carb cleaner into a vaccum hose and see if it will run. If so then you have ignition but no fuel delivery. If not then you have an ignition problem. make sure you hear the fuel pump hum when you turn the key to the run position. It should run for +/- 5 seconds then shut off. remove gas cap and listen for fuel pump operation through the fill hole. If you can hear the pump then you have a fuel injection issue. If the engine starts and runs for a few seconds then shuts off then you can suspect the crank or cam position sensor. The fuel pump runs through the oil pressure switch which could also be an issue.

Are you able to start the truck with application of the gas pedal?

Will not start. no gas getting to carburater.put gas in by hand will start?

First, I would like to know where on earth did you find a 1999 Chevrolet Suburban that is equipped with a carburetor??? I would like to see that one!

You need to check the fuel pressure at the fuel pressure test port. If the fuel pressure is low or there is no fuel pressure at all, then you need to iagnose your fuel delivery system - fuel pump, fuel pump relay, fuel pump circuits, fuel filter and the fuel pump relay circuits to the Powertrain Control Module (PCM)

If the fuel pressure is OK then you need to diagnose your electronic fuel injection system - this includes first scanning the PCM for fault codes to determine if the problem is being caused by one of the sensors or the antitheft system.

The MOST LIKELY cause of your problem is a bad fuel pump, but I would not run out and buy a fuel pump and pull the tank out of a Suburban without checking the other things first.
