Question about 1994 Geo Metro

Any solutions? the car isnt gettin fire at all. i've changed the spark plugs, the wires, coil pack, distributor cap, and the ignition module. the geo still won't fire at all. any help?

Next time it doesn't start, spray your plug wires and distributor cap with WD40. If it fires right up replace your plug wires. I had the same problem with my 3 cyl 1.0L .

I guess you could have the ignition analyzed on an oscilloscope. Maybe a tech could see something then.
I always heard the only gap was the spark plug gap-the rotor has no gap-are you sure you got the correct rotor? And does it touch the top distributor cap coil wire tower?

Let us know. It is a mystery worthy of a solution.

Misfiring


The coil is inside the distributor.
You could pull one plug wire at a time and use a spark plug or tester to check for spark.
Usually a visual exam will find fault with the cap or wires.

Sounds like you replaced alot of parts for nothing.
The pickup coil in the distributor "fires" the module which grounds the coil and the injectors.
Those components would need to be tested. The coil fires the plugs when the ground is removed by the module or the key switch.

check ignition fuse, if ignition coil is okay.replace the distributor cap and rotor, replace spark plugs and wires,could have bad ignition module, distributor ignition timing off,could have faulty pcm. have vechicle code scan before spending lot of money guessing.

I have a 1993 chev pick-up v6 4.3, i just installed new spark plugs,new plug wires, distributor cap and rotor button.All plug wires are back in the right position,and i used the firing order 1-6-5-4-3-2...


This diagram is for 1998-1995 Chevy 6 cylinder 4.3L engines.
Your got the firing order exactly correct, at 1-6-5-4-3-2, but here's the thing to double-check:
The distributor rotation is clockwise (note badly rendered arrow in picture).

Since you probably got everything right, then you're left with really unusual/rare causes of
failure of the ignition system:
(a) rotor button misaligned/failing to make contact?
(b) rotor button not pressed onto distributor shaft far enough therefore failing to provide correct
proximity to distributor cap contacts when coil fires
(c) coil wire or contact loose/disconnected - press coil wire firmly down into distributor cap.
(d) distributor shaft of other damage caused during installation of rotor.
(e) spark plug wires defective from factory
(f) spark plugs defective from factory
(g) battery low - may need a charge to start
(h) ICM (ignition control module) failure - hook up your HEI (high energy ignition) tester, and
watch the quality of the spark on each cylinder.
(i) fuel problem? If spark is being properly delivered, its gotta be a fuel problem...
(j) distributor cap not screwed down flush to top of distributor? maybe just on one side?

Inspect the inside of the distributor cap - if there are lots of little metal bits all over the inside
of the distributor cap, then you know you have a misalignment of some type in there, and the
rotor and cap are destroying each other. normal operation will throw a quota of spark-ed off
metal bits inside the distributor cap, but since your cap is brand new, your attempts to start
the engine should have rotated the distributor so few times, you should see no metal debris.

Inspect the distributor cap contacts to see if any spark marks are more of less in the middle
of the cap's proper "contact zone". If not, you've diagnosed an internal misalignment, which
you know how to correct.

Car turns over but wont start. Changed the distributor and the cap, ignition module. Tried to get spark from plug connector in the wire and there isnt one, when i grounded it to the chassis. What the...


Take spark plug out and while plug wire is connected to plug...ground plug to chassis and turn the engine and watch for spark in plug gap.

If you have a spark in the gap...I'd then check fuel system for clogged filter, fuel pump pressure etc.
If you don't have a spark in plug gap...then I'd go to the coil or coil pack depending on the model.

Vehicles either have a distributor for mechanically controlled igntion timing or are distributorless and have coil packs or individual ignition coils which are electronically controlled by the vehicles electronic control module or a powertrain control module. Simply look at your engine's cylinder head and see if the plug wire goes into a distributor cap or into a coil pack (which looks like a small block with other plug wires attached as well)

get a 20 dollar haynes or chiltons manuel and find the module and coil. always change the ignition module and coil every 4 no more than -5 years to be safe.

I had the same problem with my 85 cj7 this week, I relpaced the ignition control module, plugs, wires, cap, rotor and the the coil; still had no fire to plugs. the problem turned out to be my distributor, replaced it today and she fired right up. Most likely it was the pick up module in the distributor that went bad.
