Approx cost will be near to $300 at a car garage. Actually you can walk into any auto part store and purchase re-manufactured half shafts. A half shaft unit includes the inner and outer CV joints new boots and an axle all put together in one part. The cost is very close to $80 per half shaft. It would take an independent mechanic about 3 hrs to change both sides.

What do I fix a cv shaft?

The shaft might seem to be in but they need a good hit with a drift to force the clip into its position then you can't move it in and out by hand or put the nut on the outer shaft and give it a wack with a hammer

Stuck CV rod and tripod in transmission

there is a roll pin hold ing the cv shaft to the drive shaft, has to be tapped through, the cv joint is usually held to shaft by a cir-clip that needs 'opening out' and the cv joint will come off.your second query should be helped by doing this first procedure ,then there should be a metal ring bolted to the trans housing that holds that end of shaft in place ,this is placed OVER the rubber dif boot so you may not have seen it as old boot has come away ,do as 2 seperate operations much easier

What is the difference between a cv half shaft and cv axle shaft?

They are both the same. Sometimes it is called a half shaft simply because it is for one side of the vehicle.

Have a plymouth breeze, every time I turn left it was making a loud clicking noise, now it sounds like a really bad loud scrubbing noise when I turned and drive starting last night. So it I cant drive it....

Probably a bad CV joint on one of your drive axles to the front wheels. You have two drive axles coming out of the transaxle, one to each front wheel, and both have an inner CV joint where they enter the transaxle, and an outer CV joint where the axles fit into the wheel hub. (A CV joint is really like the old U-joints, serving the same purpose.) A clicking noise on turning is usually a badly worn outer CV joint. The cheapest fix is to buy a remanufactured half-shaft for your car. That is the axle shaft with both CV joints at each end inspected and reconditioned with new grease and CV boots installed. You need to know which side is bad before buying. The half-shaft is sold ready to install. Someone with good mechanical skills will need to remove the old one and replace it with the new reconditioned axle shaft, or half shaft as they are also called. The last time I bought one (about two years ago) the cost was reasonable- about $65.00. That is less than the cost of one new CV joint.
Hope this helps you out.

Hello, There are a lot of moving parts in the front end. You may have a bad CV joint which is on the shaft that turns the front wheels. Each side has a similar part. There are also hub bearings which are in the hub and the hub is turned by the CV joint shaft.

The CV joint can break without tearing the rubber cover on the shaft, but if someone looks under the car at the CV shaft and sees oil or grease or a torn rubber cover on the right side CV shaft; it will confirm the diagnosis.

Once this part breaks the car will not move anymore. A broken CV joint can cause other parts to fail like the hub bearings. You can call around and price the repair or if you know someone who can do the work, price the parts.

If the shaft needs to be removed, it is behind several parts which will need to be removed first.

Where is the cv joint

Hello harborviewdo. My name is Roger and i will answer your question. Your vehicle has two drive axle half shafts. One on each side of the transmission. The out board side of each shaft is called the outer cv joint. Generally when they are bad you will find the outer boot is torn and has thrown the grease out. Should you need further help please just ask. Please rate the answer you received. This way I know it was helpful. Thank you for using Fix Ya. Roger

How do i replace an right side outer cv boot on a 1998 chev k1500 ?

Pull the wheel off and pull the cv shaft nut off (36 mm) pop off the lower ball joint and tap the cv shaft from the wheel bearing, then it should pop freely from the brake rotor and wheel bearing, you will then have full access to the cv shaft and the boot can be changed easily.

My front differential is leaking!

I cannot see it, but I am guessing that you need to replace your axle seal. To do this, you have to pull your CV shaft out. Remove the tire, remove the caliper from the top of the rotor. Using a hammer on the back, remove the rotor. Take off the spindle (axle) nut, separate the axle (CV shaft) from the hub. Replace seal. It should pop right out. Good luck!
