Nothing to it. The starter position of the ignition switch simply has a single wire to the small lead on the starter solenoid.
I believe the solenoid looks like this:

Most cars put the solenoid on the starter itself, but Ford usually mounts it on the fender.

Another thing you may want to consider, is that on many Ford products, the main wire contain fusible links internally. They just look like a bulge in the wire. So use a test light to ensure continuity around the solenoid.

I have an 89 mustang gt, i am trying to run the relay to put in a push to start button, but think the whole idea is pointless if i have to put the key in the ignition before pressing the button to start...

You need to get a diagram and have several switches to run all you need to run, unless this is a" race track" only car. there are wires for Radio, windows, Ignition system, Start, run, ect. Think of al the things that work only with the key on.

89 mustang gt won't start only has spark when letting the key off

Use a 12 volt test light to check for voltage at the coil with the key turned to start. Connect the test light clip to engine ground and back probe the red wire terminal on the coil. If there is no power there, your problem is your ignition switch. If there is power there, back probe the same wire at the ignition module. If no power at the ignition module, the wire must be broke between the coil and the module. If there is power, the problem may be the engine control module. Let me know if you have questions.

Mustang 89 4 cyl 2.3 l engine starts on parking dies out on drive

if the nuetral safety was a problem the car would not start at all, sounds like you have a defective engine wiring harness, this is the most common cause of this i have seen while working for Ford.

I AM INSTALLING A TACHOMETER IN MY 89 MUSTANG GT AND I DONT KNOW WHICH WIRE TO USE ON THE DIMMER SWITCH FOR THE TACH LIGHT?

Grab a $5 12volt test light & probe back of switch where wiring comes into switch, for wire that has power when you pull lights on. If that's when you want it illuminated. If you want it too go bright or dim with dash , poke wires until you find that one, while turning switch to bright dim, and test light will do same.

89 mustang 5.0 starter problem

The only things i can think of would be either the ignition switch itself is bad or you have a shorted s wire to power. you can check this by removing the little wire on the solenoid then hook up your battery and if it doesnt turn over check for power on the wire while someone turns the key to the start position and releases it,you should have power in the start postion and none in any other position.
