I just changed the rad and thermostate on my 2006 cobalt ls. I've refilled the coolant via the overflow reservoir and it too in about 5-6 litres. I start my car with the heater on high, cap off of the...

Did you check the water pump? The hose should be firm when you cold start the vehicle since the thermostat is not open. Once the thermostat opens the coolant will flow provided the thermostat is working and installed in the correct orientation. Make sure the pulley for the water pump is turning and not frozen.

The battery died because it is cold outside. Does it have a plug in where I could plug it in when it gets cold?

if your battery is failing do to the cold -- it might be time for a new battery. look and see if there is any info in the cars paperwork or on the battery that tells how old the battery is. most car batteries only are good for 5 years max. as far as a plug in goes -- some cars and trucks have block heaters installed that keep the block and oil warm in cold climates which makes starting easier,, I live in Alaska and almost every vehicle has this because we see negative degrees for 5 to 6 months a year.
have your battery tested at a battery shop ( load tested ) and make sure the fluid levels in the battery are at the proper level.

Could be a thermostat issue?

Could be a faulty thermostat. Take a piece of cardbourd and cut it so you can put it in front of the radiator and fix it so it will stay there. Drive the car and watch your temperature gauge to see if it warms up faster but be careful as to not let it overheat. If it starts to heat up cut a 1/4 of the cardboard so a little more of the radiator shows then watch the temperature gauge. Leave it there for the winter then take it out. That is the cheapest remedy when it is cold. I take it when your heater blows it is not not every warm is that correct?

My Ac is always going off within a short time

hi charles,

i don't think the catalyst has something to do with the ac. you mentioned you are in africa and i am assuming it is positive 50 degrees celcius and not negative 50 degrees celcius as stated in your post. i could see a dash before the number 50.

anyway, there is a pressure switch that would de-activate your compressor once the high pressure reaches an abnormal level. and this level could easily be reached at 50 degrees celcius ambient temperature. so it seems there is nothing you can do about it.

i could suggest that you put an adittional fan if you still don't have, to cool the condenser further.
or just try to cool the condenser, while parked, turn the ac on, and doze the condenser with water and observe if the ac would still cut off. if it does not, then the problem is your ambient temperature.

tnx 4 using fixya,
