Honestly, that sounds bad-loud knocking that gets worse, then no start-does it sound normal when it cranks? Does it crank freely? Is your battery in good condition? More information is needed...

My 2002 lincoln ls makes a loud grinding noise when i first start it. Then the noise goes away. Now my car won't even start.

Hi Nancy:
The first thing that I would be suspicious of would be the starter. What happens when you try to start the car? Does the starter turn over? Is there a clicking noise? Did the car run fine after starting with the grinding noise? If it did, then the grinding was probably associated with the starter. If you pull the starter and the little gear on the pointy end is all chewed up you'll be on your way to solving the problem. If you're lucky, a rebuilt starter will probably be most cost effective and hopefully (usually) the ring gear will be OK.
Hope this helps.

Knocking sound when starting up truck after sitting for a while

About the only thing you can try is to change the oil and filter to eliminate gasoline contaminated oil. Try starting it up and if the same noise persists, have a mechanic put a gauge on the oil sensor port to measure oil pressure with a analog gauge.
Excess bearing clearance will result in noise and allow oil to bleed down from the bearing caps. There are a few additives which are suppose to coat the engine parts and the coating is suppose to stay on overnight to prevent "dry" starts.
So if the oil pressure is low, the oil pump may be weak, but if the oil port tests normal, bearing clearance is excessive somewhere and the engine must be disassembled to find the worn part.

Lincoln making a clicking noise and won't start.

Your starter has what is known as a bendix drive. Upon start the drive actuates and pushes and holds the starter drive gear engaged with the flywheel. The drive must be bad and is not locking in engagement, but bouncing in and out causing the noise.

While driving i hear a whining noise coming from under the hood, but it doesn't do it all the time

Could be the alternator bearings,or a pulley sounding off when alternator is under more of a load. You're not running the power steering fluid low,are you? That makes a noise when you put slight pressure on the steering, but I doubt it's your problem. don-ohio

hi a loud noise like the one you described can really only be a few things, either the main engine bearing is getting worn and is on its way out or you have a damaged or dirty lifter. The main difference between the two is the bearing will sound like a knock or grinding noise and the lifter will be more like a loud tick from either the left or right head on the motor you may just have to listen carefully to tell but it is possible and they will both speed up with the engine rpm. A bearing will usually cause problems running/starting/idling etc so maybe lean towards a lifter if it is damaged it will need an expensive replacement but try an oil change first as this can also free up dirt etc and solve the prob

Oil in 2000 lincoln ls is 4 quarts low after only 3 months, now there is knocking in engine.

Hi!!

This noise can mean bad news, but, let's not panic and try something.

Some times when oil level gets too low, the lifters discharge and valves start making a quick knocking noise that doesn't quit even if the oil level is normal.
and increases when you step on the gas.

This happened to my friend's car and fix the problem adding a Valve Quiet oil additive, in a couple of minutes the noise was gone.

If this is not the noise you are hearing, take it to a mechanic shop for repair, preferably on a Tow Truck, because the more you run the engine, the more damage you can cause to it.

Good Luck

Problems with my 2000 Lincoln Ls V8.......Engine Knocking?

spark knock is usally poor fuel.
try a tank or two of premium with cleaning additives.
if that works when try the next lower grade untill the knock returns.
then just use the lowwest grade that did not knock.

L MARK shrieking noise

No, do not spray oil on your belts. Have the belt replaced if that's where the noise is coming from. The squeaky belt could also indicate one of the accessories may be bad. Have who ever replacing the belt check to make sure all the accessory pulleys turn freely.
