First, get yourself a BIG drain pan. Then crawl under the vehicle and remove all the bolts from the transmission pan (which will then fall on your head, dumping transmission fluid everywhere). You will see the filter attached to the valve body once the pan is removed.

All you have to do is get under it with a 3/8 ratchet and unscrew the plug. It will drop 4 quarts and put the plug back in. There is no filter to replace.

Locate transmission filter on 2002 ford escape

The '02 Ford Escape doesn't have a transmission (automatic or manual transaxle) fluid filter or even a fluid pan to house one. The transmission is mounted between the drive axle and intermediate axle, directly below the yellow transmission fluid dipstick. No need to mess with it. Change your trans. fluid at the regular specified mileage. If the fluid on the dipstick is clear, it's good. If reddish or rusty or dark, change asap.

Calling all tranny mechanics, is a transmission likely to not perform in drive if 1 the computer failed? and if the internal filter has not been changed and how easy is it to replace a filter on a 2001...

Yes your transmission is computer controlled so a computer failure would directly affect operation. To change the fluid and filter just drop the pan remove the one or two bolts holding the filter in place and then grasp on two sides and pull straight down then take said filter to your friendly parts store nad match with a new one reverse steps to reassembl taking care to keep everything hospital clean.

Ford escape 2001. When I accelerate to overtake another car only the rpm shoot up but the speed does not increase.

your transmission needs immediate service. common with the escape. Turbine sensor or low transmission fluid in most cases. otherwise upwards to torque converter failure.
AAMCO transmissions should be your best start

Transmission filter

There is no fuel filter on a transmission, however a automatic transmission does have a drain plug, it's behind the oil pan, the transmission filter is not replaceable. There is no flat pan on the underside of this vehicle and if anyone states it does, does not know the ford escape period. On a ford taurus yes.
