Question about 2001 Ford Escape
First, get yourself a BIG drain pan. Then crawl under the vehicle and remove all the bolts from the transmission pan (which will then fall on your head, dumping transmission fluid everywhere). You will see the filter attached to the valve body once the pan is removed.

All you have to do is get under it with a 3/8 ratchet and unscrew the plug. It will drop 4 quarts and put the plug back in. There is no filter to replace.
