Hi, pick your engine from among the cases below. Use a wrench or 3/8 inch socket head to rotate the tensioner clockwise. While holding the tensioner, take the belt off the alternator pulley, then release the tension. Leave the belt on the rest of the pulleys. Remove the bolt holding the tensioner to the engine. Note the angle of the tensioner--there is usually some type of index pin to properly orient the tensioner angle on the engine. Replace with the new tensioner, ensuring the indexing pin is in it's hole and insert the bolt. Tighten the bolt well. Turn the tensioner clockwise again and put the belt back on the alternator pulley. Release the tensioner. Start the engine and observe the belt to insure it is properly driving the pulleys and is centered on each one. Please let me know if you have any questions, and thanks for using Fixya.

Is there an adjuster for the altenator when changing belt on a 4cyl mystique x can a tensioner be placed incorrectly

No the tensioner stays locked into the one spot.If it is mounted flush into the engine block area its fine
Just pull the tensioner back enough to release the pressure from the belt to remove and to replace the belt

I am trying to replace my water pump on a 96 mercury mystique. the hose that connects the radiator to the water pump is hidden behind the power steering pump, and the a/c unit, making it seemingly...

The a/c and p/s pumps have 2 bolts. One is a long bolt that runs throught the body of the pump and that is used as a pivot point to adjust the belt tensions. The other may be on a smaller bracket that locks the pump in place.Or it will have the second bolt just to firmly mount the pump.In the second there will be a pulley the keeps tension on the drive belt for the pumps. Before you remove the belt, draw all the pulleys and draw a diagram of the belt track so it is easy to put back on.You can remove the pump/pumps and swing it out of the way with all the hoses still attached.Hope this helps

Smelled mild burning, lost antifreeze - engine temp Hot. I looked under car and noticed a serverly frayed Belt - NOT the big surpentine belt - another small belt on the driver's side. 1999 Mercury Mystique...

For the 1999 Mercury Mystique Water Pump Belt on 2.5L V6 Engine:

Probable Causes: Belt: worn out, started slipping. Overheating caused by failure of Belt. Lost antifreeze: caused by failure of belt, not turning Water Pump Pulley, not circulating anitfreeze, which resulted in overheating.

Click on the following free direct Link. It has the Serpentine & Drive Belt Diagrams and Tensioners for your 2.5L Engine.
Scroll down the Page (about 1/3rd down) to Diagram #G99H08189, it shows the specific Water Pump Belt.
Note the Tensioner.
