Raise the bonnet (hood).. ..do this when engine is cold.... find the plastic tank near the radiator ,the lid should have marking on it like "coolant".......if the coolant in the car has antifreeze in it it will have a color to it usually yellowish /green and enable you to see the level thru the tank if it is low you might not not see any in the tank..... if so remove the lid on the tank, there are two marks on the side of the tank ...... MIN (minimum) and MAX (maximum) pour a mixture of coolant which is normally 50/50 of anti-freeze and distilled water right into the tank until it comes to that MIN mark and your done.... when the engine runs and gets to normal temp. the coolant level will rise up to that MAX mark... check the level every day for the next few days until it all settles out because there might be some air in there and when that air escapes the coolant level will drop again.... need to check for leaks in engine compartment and under the car on the ground if you find that it is leaking ...FIX IT... if your engine over heats turn it off Promptly.......long term damage can occur.... and NEVER open a coolant system when hot you could get scalded....OK!!

RE: 1996 Subaru legacy L My check engine light has been on for years! Now I need to be able to pass NYS inspection and don't know what the codes mean that were pulled by a mechanic..1 & 2...

There is a problem if you leave a check engine light on to long there is what techs call. Check light burn in the code get burn in to momery. first have a code check due fix the basic line problem if you have done that you will need a new computer ECM

My subaru legacy outback goes on normal tempertaure for about four miles. Then overheats. Drains the radiator of water. Why is this?

Hi there must be a cracked hose somewhere in the cooling system if its draining the radiator of water, i would also check the radiator side tanks as the plastic ones become brittle and small cracks appear that are quite hard to see

Sounds like your thermostat has gone bad and needs to be replaced.
Your thermostat is located under a metal housing on the top of the engine. The upper radiator hose connects to this housing. To change the thermostat you basically need to drain the radiator after your engine is cold, disconnect the upper radiator hose from the engine, and remove the bolts from the small housing. replace the thermostat, and clean the surfaces on both sides and replace the gasket too. reinstall the housing, attach the hose, and refill the radiator. start the engine, warm it up and check for leaks, then re check the coolant level after the engine cools off again

1993 Subaru Legacy Sedan 2.2 liter engine, has and over heating problem. Replaced thermostat, replaced water pump, and replaced radiator with all new. Still over heating! Any ideas??

Usually the main reason for a Subaru to over heat is a blown head gasket. If it is pushing fluid out through the overflow bottle. I would suspect a blown head gasket.

Overheating

Have you checked to see if the radiator fan works? And have you checked to see if the water pump works? Two very important items key to overheating.
