Question about 2011 Chevrolet Malibu
Hello: If you car is a 4 cylinder engine, with the hood open, stand on the drivers side facing the rear of the car, look down, (you may have to remove the top plastic cosmetic cover, toward the end of the engine about midway down you will see a bulge and on the top will be a plastic cover with a nut cast into the cover. (remove it, counterclockwise to remove) The filter is under the cover, it will come out with the cover. It is a paper element type, not the can type that screws on.

Right behind the dipstick there is a 'canister' like top. Unscrew this top and the oil filter is inside that.

On the under side of the engine, you'll probably have to jack car up enough to go under ( for safety sake make sure car is on solid level ground, chock wheel opposite of jack to keep from rolling and a jack stand placed at a solid spot on the frame of car in case jack fails) look for the cannister looking object about the size of a peanut butter jar and it unscrews (counterclockwise) should be able to do this by hand, if not, use one of those rubberized grippers like for opening jars for more leverage or an oil filter wrench, have pan ready to catch oil, should have new filter in hand before all this. when installing new filter put a light coat of oil on the rubber gasket before screwing on and DONT overtighten, once gasket makes contact with engine turn 3/4 to 1 more turn , instructions on oil filter box. once you drain the oil by way of the plug in oil pan DONT forget to put plug back in .

it is behind the oil dip stick on the top of the engine.
this should be what they call a cartridge filter you will need a 1 1/4" socket. there is what looks like a big plastic nut. Remove the plastic nut and pull the filter out. if you do not have an 1 1/4" socket you can go to any parts store and by this tool.
