I need to replace the water pump on a 1998 Mitsubishi Mirage DE 1.8 liter engine. Must I replace the timing belt at the same time?

No you don't have to, but if it has to be removed to replace the pump, why not be safe then sorry and replace it. They are not expensive and if you break a belt, you could possible get internal engine damage if the motor has interference valves in the engine

Mitsu's have a special trans fluid concoction - better to ask a trans shop before you do anything else!
In other words they do NOT take just Dextron or Type F fluid
