Hello, It's been a long time since I have adjusted a Quadra Jet. Start the engine and bring it up to running temperature. Make sure the choke is fully off. At idle , turn the right hand idle mixture screw in until you hear or feel the engine start to miss. Back out the idle mixture screw 1/4 turn. Repeat procedure for the left hand idle mixture screw. Adjust idle speed screw to 800 RPM for auto trans in gear or 700 rpm manual trans in neutral.

Before you could adjust the mixture, make sure that the spark plug gaps, ignition timing and valve clearance are all OK.
- Start the engine and bring it at operating temperature.
- Adjust the throttle stop screw to bring it at the stable rpm.
- Turn in the idle mixture screw while observing the engine speed till the engine starts to stall. At this point turn out the idle mixture screw and keep on opening slowly till the engine acquire the most stable rpm. Finally adjust the throttle stop screw to obtain the desired idle speed.

Check that you have replaced the vacuum line for the distributor to the base of the carby block. Turn the 2 idle mixture screws all the way in till they touck the bottom. Then turn both out about 2 full turns . Get the engine running and hold at fast idle and adjust screws until a steady idle is achieved . Allow to idle and screw each screw in or out slightly until even idle is achieved. You will hear the engine revs increase or decrease when you have gone too far so adjust to about the middle of turns

Start with the idle needle screw first, the idle mixture screw. Seat it all the way in, first-don't overtighten and damage it, just seat it lightly, and back out two full turns. Run the engine and set the adjustment by ear to get your best lean idle: start turning the screw in (clockwise) 1/8 or 1/4 turn at a time till engine stumbles, dies, or runs rough. Keep the engine running, and turn screw out (counterclockwise) a little at a time till you hear the idle dropping. Now between those two settings is your best lean idle. Turn the screw in, a little at a time and wait for engine to respond, tiill you get the highest idle speed. Now set the other idle screw, curb idle, to the idle setting for your truck, probably about 700 rpm. You can move back and forth between the screws to get the best steady idle. Just don't over do it on the idle mixture screw.

I HAVE A 1989 TOYOTA CORROLLA. iCAN START BUT IT DOES NOT IDLE. I HAVE TO KEEP FOOT ON ACCELERATOR PAD TO KEEP THE MOTOR RUNNING AND IT STOLLS WNEN APPROACING TO STOP. FROM FRANKLIN SOUTH AFRICA.


If your carb has one, check the idle cut-off solenoid wiring and operation first. If that checks out your idle jet is either blocked or the volume adjustment screw is out of adjustment. Start with the volume adjustment screw by turning it all the way in (counting the number of turns it took) and then turning it out about three turns. See if you can get the engine to idle at that setting or somewhere near that. If that does not work, replace the screw to the original position and remove the idle jet and ensure that it is not clogged.

Adjust the curb idle with the engine warmed up and the choke off.

The air/fuel mixture screws should be adjusted with the engine warmed up and at normal idle speed, then turn each air/fuel mixture screw in one at a time until the engine just begins to mis-fire, then back the air/fuel mixture screw out 1-1/2 to 2 turns out a half a turn at a time until the engine idle is the smoothest. (your vehicle might have restrictor caps over the air/fuel mixture screws to limit the amount of adjustment)

the idle adjustment needs to be performed warm but the mixture screws at or near the base have springs on then they need turned in all the way and backed out 2 turns then when the vehicle is warm the idle screw is near the linkage also with a spring on it if you have a tach in the car it should its a corvette lol turn the screw in or out until the car idles around 750 to 850 rpm it idles up automatically when cold if your choke is set properlythis should get you where you need to be you may need to adjust mixture screws a little the only proper way to do this is with a vacuum box but you will be in the ballpark anyway with the method i gave you

Carbureted models have a fast idle cam on the throttle,It is a screw that sets against a movable part,called the cam,when the engine heats up,the cam will drop upon tapping the gas pedal.Set the carb,while the engine is cold,by tapping the gas pedal,then adjust the fast idle cam screw by turning it in,with the engine running.Start out by turning the screw in a full turn before starting engine so it will run,then adjust the screw as the engine runs.

How do i adjust carb on 84 cj 7 it is running rich and has some black smoke


The first thing to do is make sure that the problem is not the choke butterfly. Make sure it is opening all the way because a partially open choke can mimic improper idle screw adjustment, letting it run rich. If the choke is good then you will find the idle adjustment screws at the front of your carb. They are under the float bowl almost touching the intake manifold. This is easy to screw up so be careful and take your time. Turn both screws equally, the same way and the same amount. Use 1/4 turns and try running the engine after each 1/4 turn. Rev the engine up 2 or 3 times and let it come back to idle.If it stalls then turn it up a bit so it doesn't. You may have to adjust your RPM if it idles to low at the throttle linkage. There will be a screw stop there for that purpose, turn it in to speed up and out to slow down. It's a trial and error exercise even for professionals so take your time. Hope this helps.
