Question about Jeep Grand Cherokee
Serpentine belt should be replaced when it shows signs of cracking or fraying. Most last over three years. If the belt fails, the engine will continue to run but the steering will have no power assist, the alternator will not charge and it will overheat because the water pump is no longer turning. Unless you totally ignore that and drive it 'till the engine fails, though inconvenient, it's not tragic. Whenever you buy a used vehicle it's wise to replace the belt and save the old one (along with necessary tools to do replacement, stored in the vehicle) That way, you can do an emergency change on the road if necessary. (applies to hoses as well). It gives you the benefit of knowing with confidence how old those parts are and also that if one does fail, you will not be stranded.
