The first thing I would check is to see if the power steering pump shaft has broken. The easiest way to do this is to remove the serpentine belt and then pull out on the power steering pulley. If the pulley moves out more than 1/4 inch or the pulley ans shaft come out of the pump that you just confirmed the broken shaft and you will need to replace the power steering pump.

broken shafts on full size GM's are pretty common.

Hydraulic fan does not go any faster than basic 500 rpm. Overheats after driven on highway and then in stop n go traffic. Have put 12v to the two pins (with colored wires) in the plug and the fan runs...

The hydraulic fan runs off of pressure from the power steering unit. I would recommend that you check the fluid level on your power steering pump. It is more common for the power steering pump to give issues than for the fan to go out. That being said, if you can notice any whining noise, lag, or lack of assist when turning the steering wheel, it is either the fluid level, or the power steering pump. The factory fill power steering fluid for all 1999-2004 Grand Cherokees is a unique fluid, MS5931. ATF+4 (MS9602) should not be mixed or used as a "topping off" fluid on the Grand Cherokee WJ. All WJ models should be serviced using ONLY the special MS5931 fluid. ATF+4 is NOT an approved Power Steering Fluid and should never be used under any circumstances. Note that all fluids will darken in color with usage and fluid color is no longer an indication of fluid condition.

I hope that you have found this information to be useful, and if I can be of any further assistance, please let me know. Thank you for using fixya!

Just purchased a 99 GMC Suburban. Besides a LOF should I change Trans. fluid, Raidator fluid or any other fluids right-away?

hello thee and welcome to fixya
Sounds like you have yourself a very nice automobile there>
By all means yes you deffinatly want to change the trans fluid and the filter expecially i have seen more transmissions fail because owners do not change out this 30 dollar part .
Also yes the radiator flush and backflush then drain and refill with a 50/50 mixture of a good brand of antifreeze
Also have the rear Axel fluid checked and changed if needed
Other than that things like the power steering fluid and the windshield wiper fluid of course check them if the power steering fluid os of a dark brown color and has a smoky smell to it then i would change it ok
Hope this is very helpful for you
Please rate the solution it helps us give our customers a better service too
Best regards Mike

1996 GMC Suburban Brake and Power Steering Failure

Daan,it sounds like you have hydraulic assisted brakes you should be able to trace the lines from the PS pump or steering gear box to the master cylinder,if the power steering is low on fluid refill it and have someone turn the steering wheel to one side or the other while you watch for leaks in the lines.if this helps you to locate the leak, just go to your local parts store and pick up a replacement.
