Question about 1995 Mazda MX-3

1 Answer

(MX3) Hello. When I start from cold there is a kind of rattleing sound when I am stationary and moving. It dies away after a mile or so and in high gear (4th). You dont hear it again for the rest of the trip but when you start again after it has cooled down it is back. First time I had it it went away after I fixed the tail pipe (was blowing) Then it started a few weeks back and stopped when I topped up the engine oil. Started again last week. Sounds kind of like when you change gear and have not put it in fully so you don't move but it makes a noise if that helps. I will try to record it if that helps? Any ideas would be welcome as my garage cannot find it (it goes quiet before I get there). Yours Steve

Next itme you hear it, get out and see if it loader on top or the bottom of the engine. This sounds like typical rod knock. especially when it goes away when you add oil. This would be a rebuild or engine replacement.

Engine dies when cold

All cars are sensitive to cold .it being a new car you can turn on the ignition for say 30sec to a min before cranking to allow the oxygen sensor heater to warm so it can read properly and will help in these conditions .also a new set of spark plugs can help too.

2004 Nissan Maxima RATTLING NOISE from ENGINE

I have a 2002 maxima with 75k mile and heard a rattling which died down after it warmed up.

It was a bad timing chain pulley. Don't wait too long before fixing that!

Engine make Knocking noise when cold

I have the same problem on my 2.0L 2001 Legacy auto. It began about 1000 miles ago. It has now done 84k. From my online searches this is most probably 'piston slap', and is not serious. To save weight Subaru shaved down the skirts on the pistons. With normal engine wear the pistons will at some point rattle against the cylinders until the engine is heated up and the pistons expand. The rattling should go away after a few minutes. If it persists say 10-15 minutes, it may be another problem.

Noisy rattle in engine compartment of 2003 Impala on cold start.

Take a broom handle(with the broom removed) or long heavy dowel rod , start the engine when cold and place one end of handle to your ear and the other to different parts non-moving parts of the engine compartment, including the engine to narrow down  the location of the noise.
