Question about 1994 Mercury Grand Marquis

1 Answer

I had my 1994 mercury grand marqui parked in the driveway the other day and I needed to turn the steering wheel alittle bit to see something I did not start the car I just unlocked the steering column and forced the steering wheel alittle bit and all of a sudden I felt something snap. The car is still driveable but now when you go stright the horn is upside down. Is there something like a jesus bolt or sheer pin made to break under such a load. What part should I need? Thanks in advance Joe new jersey

there is no shear pin. my guess is the wheel has broke loose from the mounting spline. you could try the reverse of what you did last time to straighten, but it may get looser in the process. The best thing to do is to replace the steering wheel.

DOn,t drive this. Open the hood, follow the steering shat to the gear box. there you will see a Rubber like connector that connects the shaft to the gear box. This is what snapped. Your car is really not safe to drive untill this is fixed.

I have a 1994 mercury grand marquis I just got the steering column replaced now car won't start

Is the newer steering column from the same year MGM? If not, the wires may be in a different configuration.

There is a difference in the LS and GS, as well as different years.

Steering wheel stuck and key wont turn

One of the things is a lock-out switch on the brake pedal lever. Some are coordinated with the gearshift, the Keyswitch, and the starter Relay. Check to see if the brake lights work when you press on the brake pedal. If no signal is going to the brake lights, then there is a chance that the Park shift lever, the steering wheel and the Keyswitch are bound up.

Sometimes a steering wheel is at the extreme reach of the travel in the front suspension. This can sometimes happen in cold weather when the car is sitting on ice or snow. When the ice or snow melts, the front tires settle into a position that puts pressure on the steering wheel and loads Torque up the steering column. Another possibility is that the car was bumped in the Parking lot and jammed into a position creating Torque on the steering column.

Last, the tumbler inside the Keyswitch could have fallen apart and that is why the mechanism is not releasing the steering wheel.

There are adjustments in the Keyswitch to be at the correct position to work with the lockout at the bottom of the steering column.

I have a 1989 mercury grand marquis that will start in neutral and only sometimes in park

Check the wiring in the steering column, something is almost disconnected. Indicating a short is near. Check the Ignition switch. Usually the problem - connections. You need a Lock smith that will
check and verify. Please let me what you did.

it could be the brake pads are low so the wear bar is hitting the rotor telling you it's time to replace the pads, or the power steering fluid could be low and the noise is comming from the power steering pump.

I am unable to turn the key in the ignition of my 87 Mercury Grand Marquis. The steering wheel is not locked. I think the tumblers are miss aligned. I bought a new Lock cylinder but can't get out the old...

Make sure the gear selector is fully in the park position. If it is not, you will not be able to turn the key to the position that locks the steering. This is by design, so that if someone has to turn the key off because of a runaway engine, they don't inadvertently lock the steering.

94 grand marquis cruise control does not work and air bag lite blinks on and off. Are these two problems associated together ?

Hello dogjasper.
Both of these issues will be caused by a part under the steering wheel called a "clockspring".
This part allows the transfer of electrical energy through a plastic spring with wire leads impregnated into it.
The plastic over time will crack and the wire along with it.
The clockspring carries current for both the air bag and your cruise control.
The steering wheel will need to be removed to access this part to be replaced.
