Can transaxle LF (drivers side) output shaft bearing be replaced while it is in the car or does it have to be removed to correctly repair? reason I am asking after repairing while still in car the output shaft seal leaks because it has excessive play up and down

There are thee ways to do this. The first, easiest, but least reliable way is to use split boot repair kit. This allows you to cut the old boot off, clean the joint as best you can, install new grease, and bolt the split boot into place and clamp it. These boots have a higher-than-average failure rate however. The next ways require jacking up the drivers side of the car, remove the wheel, caliper, and rotor. Then remove the hub nut that secures the half-shaft to the wheel bearing. Using a crowbar or other suitable tool, you must pry the inner CV joint out of the transaxle and maneuver the half-shaft out of the vehicle. You must take care not to separate the inner CV joint as it is easily damaged if overextended. You may have to separate the lower ball joint from the lower control arm to remove this shaft as it is the shorter of the two and has less space to work for removal. Once you have the half-shaft out, there are two options - repair or replace. Repair requires removal of the joint from the half-shaft assembly, and it can be difficult for someone with no experience. The easier option is to replace the entire half-shaft with a re-manufactured one. The cost is not much more than that for the repair parts, plus you don't have to worry about dirt, grit and debris in the joint damaging it since it is already fully sealed. Replacement is the reverse of removal. You simply insert the shaft thru the wheel bearing opening and into the transaxle. You must "pop" the inner joint into place to latch it, otherwise it will cause damage by leaking and binding. You will feel it lock in when you do it. The last thing that is critical is that the hub nut has a specific torque requirement. Too much or too little torque will cause the wheel bearing to fail very quickly. So use a reliable torque wrench set at the correct setting. There is no "feel" for the correct tightness on this nut.

First you need to remove the Transaxle.

Manual Transaxle System REMOVAL

1. Remove the engine cover.
2. Remove the battery terminal.
3. Remove the air duct.
4. Remove the battery tray.
5. Remove the air cleaner.
(1) Upper
(2) Lower
6. Remove the back-up lamp switch.
7. After removing the CKP sensor, O2 sensor and oil pressure switch wiring bracket, separate the connectors.
8. Remove the brake fluid leveling sensor connector.
9. Remove the speedometer driven gear connector.
10. Remove the clutch release cylinder mounting bolt.
11. Remove the cotter pin of the shift cable (transaxle side).
12. Remove the cotter pin of the select cable. (transaxle side)
13. Remove the clip of the shift cable (transaxle side).
14. Remove the clip of the select cable (transaxle side).
15. Separate the steering column shaft joint.
16. Separate the power steering oil pump hose.
Be careful not to leak after separating.
17. Separate the hose after removing the clip of the power steering return hose.
18. Remove the upper connecting transaxle bolt.
19. Separate the start motor.
20. Install the engine support fixture.
21. After removing the tire, remove the caliper.
22. Remove the transaxle side cover.
23. Remove the transaxle side under cover.
24. Separate the tie rod end.
25. Remove the wheel speed sensor and the knuckle mounting bolt.
26. Drain the oil.
27. Remove the transaxle mounting bracket.
(1) Insulator bolt
(2) Body side mounting bolt (Upper)
(3) Body side mounting bolt (Side)
(4) Transaxle side mounting bolt.
28. Remove the front roll stopper.
(1) Insulator bolt
(2) Stopper bolt (Upper)
(3) Stopper bolt (Lower)
29. Remove the rear roll stopper.
(1) Insulator bolt
(2) Stopper bolt
30. Remove the drive shaft.
31. Remove the front muffler.
32. Remove the sub frame mounting bolt.
33. Install the transaxle jack.
34. Remove the transaxle lower mounting bolt to the engine.
35. Remove the transaxle assembly.

INSTALLATION
Installation is the reverse of the removal.

Then inspect and replace the clutch place and pressure plate.

INSTALLATION
1. Apply multipurpose grease to the release bearing contact surfaces and the release cylinder contact surface of the clutch release fork assembly.
When installing the clutch, apply grease to each part, but be careful not to apply excessive grease. It can cause clutch slippage and judder.
2. Apply multipurpose grease into the groove of the release bearing.
3. Apply multipurpose grease to the clutch release lever fulcrum contact surface of the clutch release fork assembly.
4. Clean the surfaces of the flywheel and pressure plate thoroughly with fine sandpaper or crocus cloth, and make certain that all oil or grease has been removed.
5. Apply a small amount of multipurpose grease to the clutch disc splines and input shaft splines.
Do not apply more grease than necessary. Too much grease could cause clutch slip or judder.
6. Using the special tool, install the clutch disc to the flywheel. When installing the clutch disc, be sure that the surface having the manufactures stamp is towards the pressure plate side.
7. Install the the clutch cover assembly onto the flywheel and install the six (6) bolts through the clutch cover into the flywheel.
8. Tighten the bolts by one or two turns at a time, in succession, to avoid bending the cover flange.
If a special tool is not available, tighten the bolt temporarily and then torque to specification in diagonal torquing sequence indicated below.
TIGHTENING TORQUE
Single mass flywheel:
15~22 N·m (150~220 kg·cm, 11~16 lb·ft)
Dual mass flywheel:
20~27 N·m (200~270 kg·cm, 14~19 lb·ft)
9. Remove the special tool.
10. Install the transaxle. (Refer to GROUP - Manual Transaxle Assembly)
11. Adjust the clutch pedal free-play. (See CH-6)
INSPECTION
1. Check the diaphragm spring end for wear and uneven height.
Replace if wear is evident or height difference exceeds the limit.
2. Check the pressure plate surface for wear, cracks and color change.
3. Check the rivets for looseness and replace the clutch cover assembly if necessary.
CLUTCH DISC
1. Check the clutch facing for loose rivets, uneven contact, deterioration due to seizure, adhesion of oil, or grease, and replace the clutch disc if defective.
2. Measure the rivet sink and replace the clutch disc if it is out of specification
3. Check for torsion spring play and damage and if defective, replace the clutch disc.
4. Clean the splines on the input shaft and install the clutch disc.
If the disc does not slide smoothly or if play is excessive, replace the clutch disc and/or the input shaft.
CLUTCH RELEASE BEARING
The release bearing is packed with grease. Do not use cleaning solvent or oil.
1. Check the bearing for seizure, damage or abnormal noise. Also check the diaphragm spring contacting points for wear.
2. Replace the bearing if the release fork contacting points are worn abnormally.
INSTALLATION
Installation is the reverse of the removal.
Then remove pressure plate and Clutch plate.

1. Insert the special tool (that came with your clutch kit) in the clutch disc to prevent the disc from falling.
2. Loosen the bolts that attach the clutch cover to the flywheel in a star pattern.
3. Loosen the bolts in succession, one or two turns at a time, to avoid bending the cover flange.

How to remove inner CV joint on a 2005 kia amanti


To remove an inner CV joint, you must remove the entire half-shaft from the vehicle. Here is the procedure:

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Front wheel Spindle nut Lower ball joint from the knuckle
  3. Press the stub shaft out of the hub, use a plaster hammer if necessary.
  4. If removing the left side halfshaft:
    1. Using a suitable pry bar, pry the inner joint out of the transaxle.
  5. If removing the right side halfshaft:
    1. Using a suitable pry bar, pry the inner joint out of the center bearing bracket.
    2. Remove the center bearing bracket mounting bolts.
    3. Using a suitable pry bar, pry the center bearing bracket from the cylinder block.
    4. Remove the inner shaft from the transaxle.


    The individual joints CAN be replaced, but this requires disassembly of the half-shaft by cutting the clamps that hold the boots and frankly is a greasy mess. Remanufactured half-shafts are available for less than $100 USD and are already assembled for immediate installation.

Replace cv joints


Hi Douglas, I'm glad to help. My first suggestion is to get to complete shaft. This way you want have any problems later on. It's not that much more expensive and you'll be glad you did. Below is the procedure for replacing them.



FRONT DRIVESHAFTS

REMOVAL
  1. Raise vehicle on jack stands or centered on a frame contact type hoist. Refer to Hoisting in the Lubrication And Maintenance section of this manual for the required lifting procedure to be used for this vehicle.
  2. Remove the cotter pin and nut lock Hub And Bearing To Stub Axle Retaining Nut from the end of the stub axle.
  3. Remove the wheel and tire assembly from the vehicle.
  4. Remove the wave washer Wave Washer from the end of the stub axle CAUTION: Wheel bearing damage will result if after loosening hub nut, vehicle is rolled on the ground or the weight of the vehicle is allowed to be supported by the tires.
  5. With the vehicle's brakes applied to keep hub from turning, loosen and remove the stub axle to hub nut.
  6. Remove the two front disc brake caliper to steering knuckle attaching bolts Front Disc Brake Caliper Attaching Bolts
  7. Remove the disc brake caliper from the steering knuckle. Caliper is removed by first rotating top of caliper away from steering knuckle and then removing bottom of caliper out from under machined abutment on steering knuckle Brake Caliper Mounting To Steering Knuckle
  8. Support disc brake caliper assembly by using a wire hook and suspending it from the strut assembly Correctly Supported Disc Brake Caliper Do not allow the brake caliper assembly to hang by the brake flex hose.
  9. Remove the brake rotor from the hub and bearing assembly Remove/Install Brake Rotor
  10. Remove nut attaching outer tie rod end to steering knuckle Removing Tie Rod End Attaching Nut Nut is to be removed from tie rod end using the following procedure, hold tie rod end stud with a 11/32 socket while loosening and removing nut with a wrench.
  11. Remove tie rod end from steering knuckle using Remover, Special Tool MB-991113 Tie Rod End Removal From Steering Knuckle Arm
  12. Remove the steering knuckle to ball joint stud, clamping nut and bolt Control Arm To Steering Knuckle Attachment from the steering knuckle.
  13. Using a pry bar, separate steering knuckle from ball joint stud Separating Ball Joint Stud From Steering Knuckle Note: Use caution when separating ball joint stud from steering knuckle, so ball joint seal does not get cut. NOTE: Care must be taken not to separate the inner C/V joint during this operation. Do not allow driveshaft to hang by inner C/V joint after removing outer C/V Joint from the hub/bearing assembly in steering knuckle, end of driveshaft must be supported.
  14. Pull steering knuckle assembly out and away from the outer C/V joint of the driveshaft assembly Steering Knuckle Separation From Driveshaft
  15. Support the outer end of the driveshaft assembly. Insert a pry bar between inner tripod joint and transaxle case Disengaging Inner Tripod Joint From Transaxle Pry against inner tripod joint, until tripod joint retaining snap ring is disengaged from transaxle side gear.
  16. Hold inner tripod joint and interconnecting shaft of driveshaft assembly. Remove inner tripod joint from transaxle, by pulling it straight out of transaxle side gear and transaxle oil seal Tripod Joint Removal from Transaxle When removing tripod joint, do not let spline or snap ring drag across sealing lip of the transaxle to tripod joint oil seal.
INSTALLATION
  1. Thoroughly clean spline and oil seal sealing surface, on tripod joint. Lightly lubricate oil seal sealing surface on tripod joint with fresh clean transmission lubricant.
  2. Holding driveshaft assembly by tripod joint and interconnecting shaft, install tripod joint into transaxle side gear as far as possible by hand Tripod Joint Removal from Transaxle
  3. Grasp inner tripod joint an interconnecting shaft. Forcefully push the tripod joint into side gear of transaxle, until snap ring is engaged with transaxle side gear. Test that snap ring is fully engaged with side gear by attempting to remove tripod joint from transaxle by hand. If snap ring is fully engaged with side gear, tripod joint will not be removable by hand.
  4. Clean all debris and moisture out of steering knuckle, in the area were outer C/V joint will be installed into steering knuckle.
  5. Ensure that front of outer C/V joint which fits against the face of the hub and bearing is free of debris and moisture before installing outer C/V joint into hub and bearing assembly Outer C/V Joint Inspection
  6. Slide drive shaft back into front hub and bearing assembly. Then install steering knuckle onto the stud of the ball joint assembly Steering Knuckle Separation From Driveshaft
  7. Install a new steering knuckle to ball joint clamping bolt and nut Control Arm To Steering Knuckle Attachment Tighten the clamping bolt and nut to a torque of 135 N·m (100 ft. lbs.)
  8. Install tie rod end into steering knuckle. Start attaching nut onto stud of tie rod end. While holding stud of tie rod end stationary using a 11/32 socket, Removing Tie Rod End Attaching Nut tighten tie rod end to steering knuckle attaching nut. Then using a crowfoot and 11/32 socket Torquing Tie Rod End Attaching Nut , tighten the tie rod end attaching nut to a torque of 54 N·m (40 ft. lbs.)
  9. Install braking disc on hub and bearing assembly Remove/Install Brake Rotor
  10. Install disc brake caliper assembly on steering knuckle. Caliper is installed by first sliding bottom of caliper under abutment on steering knuckle, and then rotating top of caliper against top abutment Brake Caliper Mounting To Steering Knuckle
  11. Install disc brake caliper assembly to steering knuckle attaching bolts Front Disc Brake Caliper Attaching Bolts Tighten the disc brake caliper assembly attaching bolts to a torque of 22 N·m (195 in. lbs.)
  12. Clean all foreign matter from the threads of the outer C/V joint stub axle. Install the washer and stub axle to hub/bearing assembly nut on stub axle and securely tighten nut.
  13. Install front wheel and tire assembly. Install and tighten the wheel mounting stud nuts in proper sequence until all nuts are torqued to half the required specification. Then repeat the tightening sequence to the full specified torque of 135 N·m (100 ft. lbs.)
  14. Lower vehicle.
  15. With the vehicle's brakes applied to keep hub from turning, tighten the hub nut to a torque of 244 N·m (180 ft. lbs.) Torquing Front Stub Axle To Hub Nut
  16. Install the spring wave washer on the end of the stub axle.
  17. Install the hub nut lock, and a new cotter pin Hub And Bearing To Stub Axle Retaining Nut Wrap cotter pin prongs tightly around the hub nut lock as shown in Hub And Bearing To Stub Axle Retaining Nut
  18. Check for correct fluid level in transaxle assembly. Refer to Group 21, Transaxle for the correct fluid level checking procedure for the type of transaxle being checked.
  19. Set front toe on vehicle to required specification.

How do you remove the cv joint on the left side from the transmission?


YOU NEED A PULLER ON THE OUTSIDE WHEEL HUB PUSHING THE HALF SHAFT FROM THE FRONT HUB,THEN TAP THE SHAFT UNION AT THE JOINT CASE WITH A PLASTIC HAMMER TO REMOVE THE HALFSHAFT AND INNER SHAFT FROM THE TRANSAXLE. IF YOU HAVE AN INNER SHAFT REMOVE THE HALFSHAFT BY SETTING UP A PULLER ON THE OUTSIDE WHEEL HUB AND PRESSING THE HALFSHAFT FROM THE FRONT HUB. AFTER PRESSING THE OUTER SHAFT INSERT A PRYBAR BETWEEN THE TRANSAXLE CASE AND THE HALFSHAFT AND PRY THE HALF SHAFT FROM THE TRANSAXLE DONT PULL ON THE SHAFT.

Axle will not come out of the axle housing


I quote from service manual

1 . Raise and support the truck. Remove the rear wheels, the brake drum or brake caliper and rotor. If this is a disc brake, support caliper with wire. Remove seal retainer nuts from axle
housing.

2 . Pull out the axle shaft from housing. Remove the snap ring and bearing race from the axle shaft. Cut the bearing retainer. Break the bearing cage using a hammer and chisel and remove cage and rollers.

3 . Remove the oil seal, the seal retainer and the parking brake assembly (rear). Using a hydraulic press and bearing splitter, press the inner race from axle shaft. Inspect axle shaft for seal wear. Ensure that the shaft is not bent.

How to replace the cv axles


  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2. Remove the wheel and tire assemblies.
  3. Remove the splash shield, if equipped.
  4. Drain the transaxle.
  5. Raise the staked portion of the hub locknut with a hammer and chisel. Lock the hub by applying the brakes and loosen the nut.
  6. Separate the stabilizer bar from the lower control arm.
  7. Remove the cotter pin and nut from the tie rod end ball stud.
  8. Remove the tie rod end from the knuckle, using a suitable tool.
  9. Remove the lower ball joint pinch bolt and nut.
  10. Separate the ball joint from the knuckle, using a prybar on the control arm.
  11. Position a prybar between the inner CV-joint and transaxle case. Carefully pry the halfshaft from the transaxle being careful not damage the oil seal. If equipped with a right side intermediate shaft, insert the prybar between the halfshaft and intermediate shaft and tap on the bar to uncouple them.
  12. Remove the hub locknut and discard.
  13. Pull outward on the hub/knuckle assembly, push the outer CV-joint stub shaft through the hub, and remove the halfshaft. If the halfshaft is stuck in the hub, install the old hub nut to protect the stub shaft threads. Tap on the nut, using only a soft mallet, to remove the halfshaft.
    NOTE Install Differential Side Gear holder K49A-4208-AT, into the transaxle after removing the halfshaft, to keep the differential side gear in position. If the gear becomes out of position the differential may have to be removed to realign the gear.
  14. Remove the intermediate shaft, if necessary, by removing the support bearing bolts and pulling the shaft from the transaxle.

  1. Install a new circlip on the end of the intermediate shaft,
    1. 1.5L, 1.6L (VIN 5), 1.8L install the circlip with the end gap facing upward.
    2. 1.6L (VIN 3), 2.0L, 2.4L and 2.7L install the circlip with end gap facing downward.

  2. Install the intermediate shaft in the transaxle, being careful not to damage the oil seals.
  3. Install the support bearing bolts and tighten, in sequence, to 45 ft. lbs. (61 Nm).
  4. Install a new circlip on the end of the halfshaft, with the end gap facing upward.
  5. Install the halfshaft into the transaxle, being careful not to damage the oil seal.
  6. Install the halfshaft into the intermediate shaft, if equipped.
  7. Install the other end of the halfshaft through the hub. Loosely install a new locknut.
  8. Install the lower ball joint into the knuckle.
  9. Install the pinch bolt and nut and tighten to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm).
  10. Install the tie rod end to the steering knuckle and tighten the nut to 42 ft. lbs. (57 Nm). Install a new cotter pin. Tighten the nut, if necessary, to align the ball stud hole with the nut castellation.
  11. Install the stabilizer bar to the lower control arm.
  12. Install the splash shield and the wheel and tire assemblies.
  13. Lock the hub with the brakes. Tighten the new hub nut to 155-206 ft. lbs. (214-279 Nm). After tightening, stake the locknut using a hammer and dull bladed chisel.
  14. Fill the transaxle with the proper type and quantity of fluid.

How to remove the left axle on 97 odyssey


yes, the left (driver) side pops off similar to the right side, however, it just pops off of the intermediate shaft instead of the transaxle. for some reason the first time i had tried it, it would not move. later when i tried it again it came off easily. go figure!

Hi Gene,

The way that we install the box's is to remove the spyder housing....You can lever it out with a large screw driver....Another thing to check...the clutch plate....Have you fitted it onto the input shaft (spigot shaft) and tried it for size, to make sure you've been supplied with the correct replacement? Sorry if I'm asking stupid questions, but it can happen!....After you've fitted the box, refit the spyder housing, using a plank of wood and a good clout....It fits and locks in with a spring clip....

Can a shade tree mechanic change the clutch in '97 mitsubishi 3000?


Removal (3000GT AWD)
1. Remove air cleaner cover, air hoses and vacuum pipe. Remove air cleaner, intake hose, battery, battery
tray and washer tank.
2. Disconnect transaxle control cables and speedometer cable. Raise and support vehicle.
3. Remove both inner fender splash shields. Remove clutch tube bracket and disconnect clutch release
cylinder (including clutch damper assembly on FWD models) and wire aside. Support transaxle assembly
with jack and disconnect upper transaxle mount. Remove mount, bracket, plug and stoppers.
4. Remove transaxle assembly upper coupling bolts. Disconnect tie rod ends and lower arm ball joints.
Remove right support member, starter cover (if equipped) and starter.
5. Remove left side bearing bracket mounting bolts and pry left axle shaft from transaxle. Wire left axle
shaft and inner shaft assembly aside. Pry right axle shaft from transaxle and wire aside.
6. Remove front bank side and rear bank side transaxle stays. Support transaxle assembly with a
transmission jack. Remove transaxle assembly lower coupling bolts and lower transaxle from vehicle.
7. Insert a clutch alining tool to prevent pressure plate and clutch disc from falling. Loosen pressure plate
bolts gradually in a crisscross pattern to avoid warping pressure plate flange. Remove pressure plate and
clutch disc.
