Question about 1998 GMC Sierra

2 Answers

My alternator has been making a winding noise for a while now. just a while ago all of the electrical stuff in my truck began to go on and off and when i pulled over it died. i got someone to jump it but when i put it in gear it died again. Is that because my alternator is bad or is it just my battery?

Josephyoung1, It sounds like the bearings in your alternator are bad. This would account for the kind of noise it has been making and the fact that the electrical stuff in the truck has been affected. When your alternator is bad you have to rely on the battery to keep running and this does not last long. My advice is to replace the alternator before it does affect you battery. Good luck with this.

Charge the battery and replace the alternator. It show promise when it can jumped. The battery is likely still good. If the alt. has been whining, it was giving the indication that the bearings have worn. With excessive heat and vibration, it will kill the internal workings all that much faster.

My alternator on my 1994 Ford ranger started making a loud winding noise. Is that the start of my alternator going bad? Do I need to replace it? And how much would that cost me for a new one??

It could be the alternator, or one of the other pulleys.
You can check the price online using one of the auto parts websites in your area.

Replaced alternator 4 times and batterty twice in 3.5 yrs.

I suspect your car has the voltage regulator integrated into the alternator but you should probably check to see if it is separate. Cooking two batteries in that period of time isn't normal but a Saturn (Delco, as yours) ate SIX alternators before it died forever at 57,600 miles by dropping a rod cap. People made fun of my Fiats but none of them ever rose to that level of failures and had far rougher lives.
In the Saturn, there was way too little cooling for the alternator considering the possible heat developed in a small unit (but rated at 105 amps) about the same size as one in a Chevy LUV we owned years ago that was rated at only 30 amps. The Saturn alternator had to lose ~1200 watts of power in the form of heat if producing the rated output and that is way too much for a confined area. Stupid engineers . . .

If you haven't had an alternator / charging warning light on, i would suggest it's the battery, or dirty connections.

try checking the tension on all the belts(fan/water pump, power steering, alternator). If loose, they'll whine.

if you wanna change on your own it be cheap probably in the middle of 17 and 26 for timing belt so do not worry about expenses they need to change every 60k miles thats two thumbs up..also you might check your drive belt they tend to make noise when its worn or bearing on your alternator or power steering also you need to check power steering fluid if there low they tend to makes a grinding noise too..

Serious Electrical Issues

your clicking noise is from a bad turn signal switch get that replaced and it will fix the problem. as for the battery drain issue you need to take it to a dealer or a very good mechanic that has dealt with VW before and have them do a parasitic draw test. that means their is a source that is pulling amperage from your battery even though the key is off.
