i have a 1999 tahoe. When in any gear (not park) it has a loud whine from the tranny like an old chevy not taken care of. also i noticed it sometimes will **** a little after slowing abruptly and then continuing on.

  • mark loose May 24, 2011

it doesn't seem to make the whinning noise in park and it doesn't change when turning the wheel

  • mark loose May 24, 2011

Im' just wondering if the pump is going out.

  • mark loose May 24, 2011

I tried the neutral idea and it's quiet. put it back in gear and it's there loud and clear. it whines sitting still when in gear but not in park or neutral. follows rpm for sure. doe's seem quieter in higher gears though.

the vehicle drives perfectly in all gears, fast or slow even holding the brake it really torques the body to try to accelerate.just has the noise

WHEN TRANSMISSION BUZZ OR WHINE,OIL PUMP IS CAVITATION. CHECK FOR LOW OR HIGH FLUID LEVEL.LOW LEVEL CAUSES OIL STARVATION.HIGH LEVEL CAUSES OIL SERATION.IF LEVEL IS OKAY, REMOVE PAN CHECK FOR CLOGGED OIL FILTER, OR MISSING DAMAGED OR IMPROPERLY INSTALLED OIL FILTER TO BODY GASKET.ALSO CHECK FOR WATER IN FLUID. IF FILTER AND FLUID OKAY.CHECK FOR LOOSE VALVE BODY BOLTS.

Yes its quite possible p[ump is going out, get the pressure for the pump checked. If the pressure is checked low then pump is the issue. Also it can be possible that transmission is causing the problem. Try this Accelerate the car to speeds at which the whining noise is the loudest, switch to neutral gear and kill the engine. If the noise still persists, then the problem lies somewhere in the drivetrain or transmission. If the noise goes away, then it may be the engine or clutch assembly that is causing the problem. ------ Also other possibility can be wearing out of gears in the rear differential or front, may be causing whining sounds.---------- also check condition of the drive belt and the pulleys. If pulleys are getting worn out or belt is getting loose or stretched then this noise can come.----------- This should help.thanks.helpmech.

First take a screwdriver and place the tip of the screw driver to each accessory that runs off the serpintine belt. The handle part you will place your ear to that end. Having the engine running with the emergency brake on in park have someone raise the RPM's while you listen to each item running off the belt. You should hear a definet whine on one of these accessorys such as the power steering pump for they are prone to whinning quite a bit. Ifnone seem to be the same noise heard as you drive this truck think of the pitch it makes while you drive. With the screwdriver as a test the noise will be much lower of a pitch although in the same pattern with the RPM's as heard through the screwdriver

Hi,

There is already a technical bulletin issued for the same.

The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.
Condition/Concern:The vehicle may exhibit a whine Noise P/N, gone when in Drive when not moving.
Recommendation/Instructions:The suggested diagnosis is to shift to drive, apply brake and raise engine RPM. Noise should diminish (may not go away).
If noise is diminished or eliminated, suspect drive or driven sprocket support bearings, or gear bearing (most common is drive sprocket support bearing).
Visually Inspect Drive Sprocket Support Needle bearing for spalled needle roller.
Replace Drive Sprocket Support item #522 (includes 521/523).
Follow appropriate SI repair steps to access drive and driven sprocket supports for inspection if attached condition is found replace appropriate parts.
Please follow this diagnostic or repair process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed.

Unfortunately, this is not an easy fix. I wish i could have a better news.

Let me know,if needed further assistance.

Hope i helped you.

Thanks for using ' Fixya ' and have a nice day!!

My 1999 ford expidition sounds like its shifting in overdrive when i reach about 40 miles per hour, the engine gets loud sounds a jet taking off.

You have it backwards

What you hear is engine noise from
higher rpm, because your trans is not
upshifting, as a result of your input on
the gas pedal

You need to have a trans or repair shop find out why
you have a delayed or no shift condition

When you get to 4th or 5th gear (overdrive) you also
get torque converter lock-up & things should get quieter

1999 Dodge Durango, bucking at launch and loud whine.

all dodges have a bilt in code check, on my 94 caravan, i have to rev up the idle to approx 2300,for 10 seconds, turn off all accessories, put foot on brake in regular idle, put shift lever in all gears, go back to park, turn key on and off 3 times the third time leave in start position and watch the check engine light, it will flash in series, first will be 1 flash followed by two quick flashes, this tells you your computer is working(not a problem code) then watch for other flashes and write them down, the last code should be a 55, meaning 5 quick flashes followed by 5 quick flashes of check engine light, at least you can diagnose some problems this way, best to purchase manual from autozone, there is a section on this process, or take to your local autozone and have it done free

1998 Yukon high idle sound with bad gas mileage.

What you have is the torque converter clutch, cycling on and off.
When it is off.your rpm will go up and your milage will go down
First-check to see if your brake switch, on the back of the brake peddle, is loose or misadjusted. When you apply the brakes, the first thing to happen, is that you unlock the converter,so your trans is not connected directly to the motor,or you would stall. Then below 42 MPH,your trans is working off the converter, as a pressure multiplier ,based on rpm
Second- switch okey. You remove trans pan and change TCC Solenoid.

Let me know if if you need more guidance

Continuous "whine" @ 1500 RPM only; and jerks/2001 Lincoln LS

Run the car from the top of a hill and let it coast at your whining speed. Put it in Neutral, does the whine disappear?
If not its in the drivetrain (wheels, driveshafts, tranny)
Very unlikely to be the timing belt. If it appears at a fixed speed then its drivetrain, if it whines at fixed revs its the engine.
Most likey the transmission I fear....Tires will also make loud whining noise too though...

2004 Grand Cherokee Whine - What is the Problem

It sounds like your power steering fluid is low. When the fluid is low there will almost always be a constant growl coming from the pump. Worst case - it may be the pump itself going bad. . I own 3 Jeeps but have only had this problem on my 87 Cherokee.
Ford PS pumps are notorious for making noise as they get old, but they still seem to work ok. This may be the case with your Jeep. If the PS still works and the fluid level is normal, it may just be a matter of whether or not you can stand to listen to the noise.

Low whine while under load

The pinion depth is incorrect in the differential. This can cause excess backlash, improper bevelled gear meshing, and permanent damage to the gear set. It can be repaired most of the time by changing the shims on the pinion to allow 0.010" more penetration o the pinion into the housing.
