Stacey_jo219, You dont state here where the sound is coming from. Does it sound like the top of the engine? If it is, then you could have a bad lifter or two. This usually happens when the engine is run with not enough oil in it. This sounds more like a ticking sound than a knock as you state here. This will sometimes go away with time when you have the proper oil level in the engine. If it doesn't then the affected lifters will have to be replaced which is hard to diagnose which ones are bad so they are usually all replaced. If the sounds like it is from the bottom of the engine (this is more like a knocking sound) then it is usually a bad bearing on the crankshaft and the engine will have to be replaced. This is cheaper than rebuilding the engine. These are just two possibilities of what your problem could be. If you wish, resubmit your question and try to be more specific about where exactly the sound is coming from. Good luck with this.

Knocking noinse

Sounds like a bad rod bearing. Doing an oil change with halfway decent oil will "disguise" the sound but is still there. Check oil pressure when car is warm, if u are getting a low reading it's definately rod bearing (s). Car must be completely warm. Drive around for ten fifteen minutes, then check.

2000 gc lmtd-recently heard something knocking sounded like something loose, checked oil and was completely out...put oil in and right away the knocking went away but soon after the knocking came...

I'm going to tell you what you don't want to hear. Once you run it out of oil or excessively low on oil to the point that it's knocking you likely (99%) have damaged the engine rod and main bearings as well as the oil pump (possibly other internal parts as well).
you could try using a good viscosity improver like lucas additive but generally it won't help with that kind of problem. Best option is a good engine from a scrapyard....expensive, but less than a rebuild.
Wish I could tell you to push a little red button somewhere and it will be fine but in reality, oil is like your blood...Run out of it and the engine is dead.

The engine has a nkockig sound..could this be caused by a bad knock sensor?

No it isnt a knock sensor the knock sensor job is to detect a knock noise and ****** timing. The knock that it is looking for is from octane or fuel or pinging that creates N0X s. A pollution gas. The knocking noise that you are hearing is different. If it is a multiple noise ar a rattling sound that will be the valves. There are other noises like a piston knock this knock is a sharp metallic noise, If the knock occurs only on acceleration that noise is a crankshaft noise. You need to check you oil level and make sure it is corrects. Look at the oil condition do you see silverish or whitish condition,is the oil deep black.

Lost of power, knocking sound

HAVE YOU CHECK YOUR OIL LEVEL? OR OVERHEATED THE ENGINE, CHECK THE ENIGINES OIL LEVEL, YOU MUST OF LOST OIL, RAN LOW ON OIL OR YOUR OIL PUMP GAVE OUT. IF THERES KNOCKING OIL NOISE, THATS NOT GOOD AT ALL. ASLO WHERES THE KNOCKING FROM TOP OT THE BOTTOM. THE TOP IS LESS TUMPING THE BOTTOM IS HARDER TUMPING AND SOUNDS HARDER WHEN ACCELARATED. LET ME KNOW. CHECK THE OILS CONDIOTION FOR GLIDERIN THE SUN YOU SEE THE RESEDUE METAL GLIDERING. IF SO THE MOTOR IS MOST LIKELY SHOT.

Does the timing chain and anything to with oil

Yes and no. If the oil pump is going bad the Connecting rods will knock. The Timing chain could be making the sound if the Chain guide came free. My guess is you have a 7 - 70 warranty and they are trying to get out of rebuilding your engine.

Oil pressure light on and knocking noise now

The light comes on when the oil pressure is too low, when the sending unit is bad, and, if you have too much oil in the engine and it whips the oil so much that the oil pump cannot pull the oil in since it is mainly bubbles

The knocking sound comes from a shortage of oil to he bearings, tapping comes from the valve train under the rocker cover (cylinder head).

Make sure you haven't lost any oil & that it isn't overfull and correct that if needed. Beyond what I've mentioned, you would be looking at the oil pump needing to be replaced or major engine repair if the bearings have spun or worn excessively.

good luck

Oil light goes on and off and engine has a knocking sound.

This sounds like severe engine damage, do to loss of internal lubrication (no oil). That's the bad thing about 'idiot' warning lights, they come on when u have a severe problem, and the damage is done. You are going to probably have to purchase a used engine from an auto salvage yard, or purchase a re -manufactured engine. Sorry for the bad news, this is about as bad as it gets.
