I have a 2001 Dodge Intrepid SE....2.7 engine...someone told me it sounded like my timing chain was about to go out. What will happen if it does and how much would it cost to get a new one...just the actual part?

What is mileage, and symptoms/sounds. Here's a quote from (www.repairpal.com) just for your info. You can also go to that link for price of repair/parts in your area.

Sometimes, a defective water pump, a loose or defective harmonic balancer, a defective drive belt tensioner, or a cracked flex plate can exhibit symptoms that may be misdiagnosed as a worn timing chain assembly.

Dreanaparker, I am not sure if a 2.7 Chrysler engine is what is called an interference engine or not. If it is and the timing chain breaks then you will have the possibility of bending a few valves when it does. This opens up a whole new set of repairs as the cylinder heads with the bent valves will have to be replaced as well as the timing chain. If it is not an interference engine then just the timing chain will have to be replaced. As far as cost goes for the chain I believe that it will be in the$100.00 to $200.00 range. Sorry I can't be more specific. Good luck with this.

How do i change a water pump on 2001 dodge intrepid?

This vehicle has a double overhead cam engine. The water pump is driven off the timing chain. Unless you have had experience doing internal engine repairs, this is not a DIYer job. There is great risk of doing more damage than good if any step(s) of the repair procedure are not done correctly.

Is a 2001 dodge intrepid 2.7 R motor an interference motor

The 2.7 engines use a timing chain instead of a timing belt.
I don't think they are interference engines.

after the repairs needed and the associated cost you will be above value for the vehicle, if you havent heard it run and know it needs a timing chain you run the risk of buying a car with twisted valves. resulting in the need of an engine

If this car passes E-Test and doesn`t need much for SAFTEY test, then price is pretty good.
If this car doesn`t run why would you be intrested?? If it needs a timing chain/belt ,then stay away

I own a 2004 dodge intrepid and it has about 180,000 miles on it. i recently replaced the water pump, oil pump and the timing chain. now when i got the timing chain fixed some how it was not put on...

it is possible that when the timing chain was incorrectly fitted that damage was done to the cam lobes or followers and that is the ticking noise
the oil recommended is too light for a used engine so go to 20w 40 or 30w 50
take it to an accredited repair shop for a proper diagnosis

Hi, your Intrepid does not have a timing belt, this 2.7 engine uses a timing chain which is internal to the engine. Happy motoring.

Major disassembly of the engine is needed. Errors in the reassembly can cause major engine problems.

Best left to a repair shop that has experience in this job.

hello, try this, take off oil filler cap and have someone crank engine, if you see the rocker arms moving do a compression test on each cylinder, if no movement is seen, it is VERY likely the timing belt is broken and the engine should be fine! good luck, marty

2004 Dodge Intrepid 2.7 engine, and oil light keeps coming on.

Major issues with the 2.7L motor. design flaw causes oil to hang in the heads and "cook" creating sludge. Sludge builds until the passage to the timing chain is blocked starving the chain and causing near instant failure...this is a "rattling" or Roulette wheel sound. The 2.7L is an "interference" type engine. When the chain breaks or jumps, the cams stop in position thus leaving the valves wherever they may land. The pistons keep on moving though....and kiss whatever valves happen to be open. Bye Bye Motor. Using Synthetic oil EARLY and exclusively cures the sludge issue. Replacing the timing chain and components at interval is crucial...don't wait for it to break or jump!
