I believe a special tool is needed to change inner tierod. you can rent one from a auto parts store that rents out tools. have a good day !! you can also buy a haynes manual for your car, they are based on a complete teardown of vehicle. for about 20.00, you can also get this book at any auto parts store. this book will guide you step by step. some manual give this info, and some dont. if not you can go to library and look up the info to change inner tierod, on your car.

In replacing outer tie rods, should inner rods be change also?


The leak is not from the inner tie rod. It is from the rack and pinion. Racks come with the inner tie rods.

1996 bronco steering pull to the right once in a while


you may have a bad lower ball joint-jack car up put jackstands under it to be safe-with a pry bar try to move the steering knuckle away from the lower control arm-if it wiggles then thats your culprit-cheers Denny

I have loose tie rod ends on both the right and left side of a ford 1999 expedition. On the passenger side the bottom bolt is missing completely. Do I need to replae both with a whole new assembly?


If the tie rods are just loose,you replace the bolts

Obviously if the end joint or brg is worn & loose you replace
them. (not the entire arm,just the joint)

You can replace the bolt or the tie rods yourself,
then have the front aligned within a few days as the
toe will be off.

I assume your talking outer ties rod ends,
not inner --- inside the steering rack boots!!

The inner joint does require the complete, what
looks like a rod or arm to be replaced

I have a 1996 Mazda 626 and have been told I need to replace the tie rods or I will have to replace my tires about every 6 months. When I went on line to try and order the tie rods there were several...


Jack the front of the car up high enough to get under it, put jack stands under the car for safety.

Start on either side and check the tie rod ends for looseness. If you have someone to help, have them hold one tire with hands at 3 and 9 o'clock while you grab the other tire the same way. Try to move the tire by pushing and pulling. If you feel movement, have your helper sit in the car and move the steering wheel 1/4 to 1/2 turn left and righ as you check the tie rods for which one or ones are loose.

Once you have found out which to replace, after they are replaced, you will need to have the car aligned.

Replacing tires every six months is not the worst--Sooner or later a sloppy tie rod let's go. They don't always go out all at once, but sooner or later they all need replaced.

How to install inner and outer tie rods on a 2004 Chrysler Pacifica - I waqs told buy a trusted local mechanic that I need to replace 3 of the 4 tie rods. Might as as well replace all 4, but how hard is it...


You will need to rent or borrow in inner tie rod tool but here are the directions.
1. Break the jam nut on inner tie rod to outer loose.
2. Remove nut from outer tie rod attaching it to steering knuckle.
3. Use hammer to get tie rod out of knuckle.
4. Unscrew outer tie rod then jam nut
5. Remove clamp from boot and slide off inner tie rod.
6. Using side cutter or hammer and chisel break off metal clamp on the inside of inner tie rod boot.
7. Using inner tie rod tool, unscrew inner tie rod from rack and pinion
8. Reinstall parts and have it aligned

Repair inner tie rod end of 1997 dodge avenger


f734654.gif #3 is the inner tie rod and it is simply screwed into each end of the steering rack. Raise and support the car remove the wheel and you should see where it is connected to the outer tie rod. There is a lock nut that you'll need to loosen slightly to get the tie rod off. You will need to get a wheel alignment once done but by slightly loosening the lock nut, you have a good reference of how it should be once done. Once loose, you should be able to turn the tie rod by using a wrench on the flattened area on the rod. Once disconnected from the outer tie rod end, you should be able to remove the dust boot covering the inner tie rod connection. Mine came right apart so hope you have no problems. After you have it out, here is where the loosened locknut comes into play. Put the new and old tie rod side by side, line up the ends that attach to the rack and pinion then mark the new rod so you know how far to put the lock nut on the new tie rod. Simply tightly screw the new one onto the rack and pinion put the boot back, screw on the lock nut to the mark then attach the tie rod to the outer tie rod end up to the lock nut then tighten the lock nut against the outer end. Get the tire back on, lower the car and Voila, done. Now go get an alignment.

The book calls for about 5 hours labor with a lift, air tools, and experience. It's a tough job. Here are a few tips, Take the lines loose from the rack; not the pump. With the tires off, Remove the nuts from the outer tie rods.Run the nuts back on the tie rods stud and hit the steering knuckle where the tie rod's stud goes through.This will free the stud. Remove the steering shaft from the rack.(take the bolt all the way out.Remove rack mounting bolts. Twist,pull ****,and fight the rack out the side of the car with the most room. The new rack will have inner tie rods already installed. Make sure the new rack is centered.(Turn left then right count the turns then center same # of turns from left to right). Count the threads or measure from the outer tie rod's jam nut to the last thread on the inner tie rod.(you can leave the jam nut in place and take the outer tie rod off and measure from the jam nut to the end of the rod.)Install the outer tie rods. Replace rack in car. hook up steering shaft.Bolt up rack. Hook up lines. Add fluid and work rack back and forth to bleed air. recheck fluid. Have it aligned. (or just take it to a shop.This job is going to be a nightmare!!!)

Rack/Bellow Boot Replacement


if you are talking about the steering rack boots, you cam just take a hacksaw and make a small cut right behind the locking nut on the inner tie rod ond shaft. The nut that you need to loosen a bit to take the outer tie rod end off. make a small cut right behind it, so you can see where to stop wit it when you put the whole assemble/boots back on. That would be what I would do, if I didn't want to get it aligned after. It will be close enough, but I would keep an eye on your tires to make sure, they are not wearing off faster than normal. If you talking CV boots, different procedure. Let me know.
