Question about Chevrolet Cavalier

1 Answer

I have a 1989 Chevrolet Cavalier with a 2.8 liter engine. This vehicle set for 2 years. I have just recently installed a new engine. The engine runs with no problems. The only engine code was 15 so I have replaced the temperature sensor. There are no other codes. When the engine gets to operating temperature and when I come to a stop, it will stall and die. It will restart with no problem but once you put it in gear, it will die. When the engine cools down for 30 minutes, there is no problem. It goes in gear and drives with no problem but as soon as you come to a stop, it will stall again and die as though you were driving a manuel shift transmission and not pushing the clutch in. I suspect the torque converter clutch is at fault. If so, what do I do? Lou

There is a black 4 pin electro motor on the side of the throttle body held on by 2 screws. This is your idle air motor. Replace it and make sure that the passages are clean with the use of throttle body cleaner. Let me know how this works for you.

How can I identify the cooling system hoses on a GM 1989 5.0 liter engine for installing a flushing kit?

Your vehicle is way past a flush kit. Even if you recently replaced the radiator. If it over heats, you would have to use something heavy duty, Like muriatic or sulfuric acid. Then those would eat up the heater core and the radiator. Both copper and aluminium. If you have no heat, then replace the heater core. I have only come across a couple of engines that needed such a drastic acid solution.

Plenty of wires run around the back of the engine and transmission. Sounds like you may have caught some in between the engine and transmission when putting them together. This would definitely cause a problem like this. I been there and done it.

I have a 1998 cavalier, we changed the starter twice and the ignition switch as well. The car will crank over three or four times and then the next time it acts like it wants to start it keep cranking even...

Product Safety - Ignition Circuit Thermal Events # 04002 - (02/18/2004)
04002 -- Ignition Circuit Thermal Events
1998 Buck Skylark
1998-2001 Chevrolet Cavalier
1998 Oldsmobile Achieva
1998 Pontiac Grand Am
1998-2001 Pontiac Sunfire
Due to part availability, this recall is being conducted in three phases. Phase 1 will consist of 1998-1999 vehicles, phase 2 will consist of 2000 vehicles; and phase 3 will consist of 2001 vehicles. When sufficient parts are available to notify customers of 2000 and 2001 vehicles, you will be notified and will receive a new initiation report.
Recall - Ignition Circuit DefectCondition
General Motors has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in certain 1998 model year Buick Skylark; 1998-2001 model year Chevrolet Cavalier; 1998 model year Oldsmobile Achieva; 1998 model year Pontiac Grand Am; and 1998-2001 model year Pontiac Sunfire vehicles. If the engine fails to start and the driver holds the key in the "start" position for an extended period, high current flows through the ignition switch, and sometimes produces enough heat to melt internal switch parts. If the switch is damaged, a fire could occur in the steering column, even with the engine off and the key removed. The fire could spread to the interior of the car, which could injure occupants of the car or cause damage to adjoining structures.

I have a 89 cavalier z24 2.8 liter. It wont longer that 2 or 3 seconds. i have good spark, fuel at the rail i don't have a gauge... not sure if it is a fuel problem or something with the computer. thanks...

you will have to get the fuel pressure tested as there is no way to know for sure what the pressure is.these systems run at about 35lbs sounds like a fuel pump problem or volume problem,it could be a plugged filter, either way the pump would need replacing.and change the filter at the same i say without knowing what the pressure really is your taking a chance that it is the pump.however these are a common problem with these cars.

Car won't stay running its like its not getting gas (and yes tank is 3/4 full) shop is telling us its a computer problem.. i didn't think 1989's had a computer. car is a 4cyl automatic

Your 1989 cavalier is a 2 liter fuel injected engine so yes you do have a computer to run the engine so check your fuses and start with the simple and replace the fuel filter, air filter and clean the throttle body with throttle body cleaner. Don't use carburetor cleaner, the carburetor cleaner is to corrosive for the gaskets used in the throttle body. Also make sure all the vacuum lines are connected and not damaged, a bad vacuum line to the MAP sensor will cause what your having.
Good luck and keep us posted. Be glad to help you get your car running 100% again without the cost of a garage trying to be like the tax man.
Thank you for using Fixya
