Mike_harvey3, What you have to do is open the rear door (hatch) and look for the screws that hold the light assenbly in place. You will see them on the vehicle side of the light assembly. Remove these screws and then pull the assembly straight back as there will be a plastic piece that is held in by a rubber grommet. Turn the light bulb socket to the left and remove it. Replace the bulb and reverse the procedure to replace. Good luck with this.

Check the space gap between the brake lever to the brake switch.

Also check the connector to the brake switch.

You have to look under the dash carefully.

These is not too much room under there.

Just ran you hand along the brake paddle.

Press the brake switch by hand and see is brake light go on.

Check all connectors for corrosion.

SOURCE: O4 GMC Envoy, I replaced

Hello bfshelton.

There was a recall for this particular problem by General Motors. Recall #04087.
It may be in your best interest to phone your local GM dealer, provide the details, such as your VIN (vehicle identification number) and see if it has been done.
There may be limitations on time and mileage for this recall. If so, the parts are available at good auto parts suppliers for around 20 or 30 bucks.

If the circuit boards are OK you will need to check for power to the rear when brakes are applied.
There is also a separate fuse for the brake lamps from the center to the left and right. This fuse is in the rear fuse panel under the rear seat.
Your owners manual should have the fuse designation.
If not, let me know here and I will help you out.

Replacing brake light

Hi Edward-
The top brake light lens is held on with two size T25 Torx screws. You need a suitable size torx screw driver to remove (and again later replace the assembly) the two screws. Once the screws are removed (do not lose these), you can remove the entire lens assembly. You'll see the wires leading to the plastic bulb socket. The bulb socket twists off the assembly like a bayonet. Once the bulb socket is off, you'll be able to remove the bulb simply by pulling it straight out. Replace the bad bulb by inserting the new bulb and then reassemble your third brake light in the reverse order you removed it. Enjoy!

I have a 97 Honda Accord. We just replaced the lens since it was broken, the light stilled worked, however since we changed the lens, it works except we we are actually pressing on the brake pedal. Whats...

The tail light works but not the brake light? The bulb is burned out this is a two phase, or function tail light one for running lights the other brighter one is brake lights. Simply replace the bulb and this SHOULD fix it. Good Luck
