Question about 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee

My 2003 jeep makes a noise when I turn left. It gets worse when it is warmer. It is a grinding groaning sound. I had cv joint replaced and wheel barrings replaced. But it still makes the noise. Could it be u joint? What else could it be?

    maybe the with the suspension, usually it is the CV joint outer when you are turning, but if all that has be replaced and it only happens when you turn left then it is that side of the car. Sorry I did not help Tim

    ok now I need to ask what would need to be replaced if it is the suspension. This may be a dumb question but I dont know

    I not saying this is the problem but it maybe, I would think whomever did the work would have checked the suspension, but it should be safe just a little embarrassing because of the noise.

    I'm not sure they have it right, I was told the rear end has a tendancy of going out...I might be selling mine because of this

Mazda 6 grinding noise when turning


Grinding noise upon turning is normally one of two issues. First, and most often, it is caused by a worn out outer CV joint. If your vehicle has more than 50000 miles on it and the axle shafts have never been replaced, this is what I would suspect first. In addition, CV noise will be louder when turning under power (gas pedal pressed) than when coasting into a turn. The other possibility is a front wheel bearing assembly. These are not as common, but do wear out as well. The wheel bearings will usually make no noise when going straight, but will make noise upon even the slightest side to side turn. CVs on the other hand, usually grind only when going into corners or making left or right turns. If you suspect a CV joint, but don't have high mileage, you could have a torn CV boot that resulted in the grease that lubricates the joint being depleted and causing the noise. You can inspect the out boots visually for tears....grease leaking out usually leaves telltale spatters in the wheel wells also. Replacement of the CV joint can be done, but it is usually cheaper to replace the entire axle shaft as they are serviced as a unit.

Vibration coming from front axle when coming to a stop it gets worse, brakes are good , maybe cv joint?


if you feel the pulsation in brake pedal when stopping. its a warped brake rotor thats causing it. for bad cv joint symtoms--- Unusual noises when making turns. As you are driving on the road and you make a turn at the corner, if you start hearing unusual sounds coming from under the car then this is one of the symptoms of a bad CV joint. These noises will sound like something is clicking beneath the car every time you turn the steering wheel. Evidence of a damaged boot. Steering wheel feels heavier. The steering wheel will start to feel tighter and heavier and you can hardly make simple turns to the left or right. In severe cases you might even feel heavy vibrations like you are driving down a rocky road.

If you still think the noise is coming from the left side CV joint it would be more advisable to replace the entire axle as an assembly. For the time and effort it takes, you can usually get a rebuilt axle assembly for only a few dollars more than the CV joint and the boot required to repair one. You will need a large axle nut socket (usually 30 - 32mm) to remove the axle nut. The lower ball joint and tie rod will need to be separated along with the brake caliper and rotor, from the spindle. I would recheck the grinding noise before doing it. A lot of wheel bearings are mistakenly diagnosed to the wrong side. If the noise is loudest when turning left, most people would assume the left side wheel bearing is at fault. However if the noise is loudest turning left it indicates the right side wheel bearing is most likely at fault. Due to the weight distribution of the front end, turning left the weight all transfers to the right side, loading that bearing. Make sure thats not the case before tackling an axle.

Grinding noise changes with speed stops when turned right. replaced left front wheel bearing. noise is still there. whats wrong ?


Does sound stop when you turn LEFT?

Turning RIGHT puts the heavy load on the LEFT front wheel.
That initially STOPPED the noise, correct? So why did you change L?

Turning LEFT puts the load on the RIGHT. Did you change the RIGHT?

Let's say this:
If turning RIGHT stops the noise, it's the RIGHT one that's likely bad.
If turning LEFT stops the noise, it's the LEFT one that's more likely bad.

Make sense? Turning RIGHT loads the LEFT wheel; and vice-versa as the WEIGHT SHIFTS AWAY FROM THE TURN.

More than likely it is what some folks call a CV joint problem, not wheel bearings. Try backing up and then going forward to see if "clunking sound" or a sharp "bang" is heard. Wheel bearings and CV joints only work if smooth. Sometimes a BEARING RACE is bad. Also, a bad spindle / part of the CV joint / transaxle assembly worn or badly machined. If in a WET ENVIRONMENT especially, u may want to try marine grade grease or teflon-added grease.

04 cavalier makes grinding noise in front end turn the wheel to the right grinding gets worse turn the wheel to the left grinding stops. it sounds worse at 40mph and above. what would cause this?


3 things to check:
Worn disc brake pads, grinding against the rotor.
Wheel bearing
cv joint.
You posted grinding gets worse turning to the right, the problem is the driver side wheel, but it would be best to have both wheeles checked.

Grinding noises when 4x4 is engaged


Most likely wheel bearing or cv joint issue. look for a ripped open cv boot. I believe that year used cv joints instead of regular u-joints. Hope I helped. Thanks
