take the car for a test drive and ask when the timing belt and water pump were replaced if not given an answer or not given a straight answer , have them replaced also take the car to a mechanic you know and trust who does not work at the dealership where the car is located

If your Check Engine light came on and your vehicle seems to run fine. You can drive your vehicle. if you have an AutoZone, Checkers or similar auto parts store closer, they perform FREE computer trouble codes retrieval.

What service should be done on a 2000 new beetle that has 20,000 miles? If a timing belt fails will it total an engine as in a honda?

yes, it is an interference engine, so if the timing belt fails it blows the engine, but 20K is very early to worry about that. at that mileage, there shouldnt be too much to worry about other then maybe some fluids.

When should the timing belt on a 1998 vw beetle 2.0 be changed?

60,000 miles. If the belt breaks it will be expensive to fix as it causes engine damage (bent valves).
