Question about 1998 Toyota 4Runner

98 runner cooling issues

Recently i changed the water pump thermostat,put in a new rad,got rid or the old fan and clutch and installed the electric flexi lite fan,after driving for a time the upper hose is quite hot and hard while the lower hose and lower section of the rad are both cool to the touch,,,any ideas thanks

You probably have airlock in the cooling system.

Not sure about the 4 runner's cooling system, but if there is airlock I usually take the coolant back out, take the thermostat back out, fill the engine block from this hole with 50/50 coolant, reinstall the thermostat, upper hose, fill the radiator and tank, then run the vehicle with the heater on max (rad cap off) and then fill the rad as the rest of the air comes out.

98 lumina overheating but when the thermostat is tested it opens up but when put back on it still overheats and had lost more than a gallon of water


Does this problem occur at idle? If so, does the cooling fan work? If the fan does not work the engine will overheat at idle and not overheat while moving. If you had the thermostat out why did you not replace it? For the cost it really isn't worth re-installing. If the fan works you may have a water-pump problem or a restricted cooling system, which may be as simple as no air-flow through the radiator. Look for excessive dirt, leaves, etc in the cooling fins of the rad. And don't forget to check for the same in the AC heat-exchanger.

My 99 ford expedition is overheating. We've put on a new water pump, new serpentine belt, new thermostat. What else is there that could be causing this problem.


check the cooling fan if it's just clutch fan the clutch is probably bad if it's an electric fan check and make sure the fan is comming on

The engine in my 99 venture van wont stop overheating?i have put a new thermostat in and assured that the cooling fans are working properly??anyone???


Your water pump may be defective. The impellor may be loose. When the engine is cool, open the rad cap & start the engine. As it heats up & the thermostat opens, look in the rad and see if you have enough circulation of fluid. If not, change the water pump. Check to see if the rad fins are not loose & in good shape. If not, change the rad. Pressure test the rad cap in order to make sure it is holing the proper pressure. Hope this Helps you. Good luck!

Change water pump


1 disconect neg.battery cable 2 drain the cooling system 3 remove air intake tube from filter housing to throttle body 4 remove top half of fan shroud 5 remove the serpentine belt 6 use a strap wrench to prevent the waterpump pulley from turning while turning the fan clutch in the counterclockwise direction. 7 remove fan and set aside 8 remove belt tensioner 9 remove hoses from water pump 10 remove 6 bolts, 3 on either side and remove the water pump. 11 remove the thermostat housing from the old pump and install on the new one. 12 re assemble in reverse order. make sure the mating surface of the engine block where the pump bolts on is clean and free of old gasket material before installing new pump and gaskets. When assembled fill cooling system, start engine and let idle untill thermostat opens and engine reaches operating temp.KEEP WATER LEVEL FULL. After a test drive recheck the coolant level, and you are done.

Are you sure the Fan is turning to cool the Engine? If it is not coming on to cool Engine Check the Rad. cooling fan relay.

Keeps over heating i have new radator old one blew out this seems to be doing same i have buy past heater core and removed therm stat,what is wrong???


sounds like a head gasket leak, you can buy a kit at your local auto parts store , that you can stick on your radiator and will change color if exhaust gasses are present in the cooling system. alumiseal does a great job of sealing leaks on the straight 6 motors on these models

when your engine is hot,check the temperature of your rad,if you get more than 30/50 degrees difference between the top and the bottom of the rad,you need to have your rad professionaly flushed.If you have a digital laser it will out perform any other temperature testing tool.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this manual.
  2. Drain the cooling system.
  3. Remove or disconnect the following: NOTESome 4.0L engines are equipped with a fan clutch that threads Directly on to the water pump shaft. This fan clutch is equipped with right-hand threads. NOTEDo not store the fan clutch assembly horizontally, silicone may leak into the bearing grease and cause contamination. NOTEOne of the water pump bolts is longer than the others. Note the location for reassembly.
    • Negative battery cable
    • Electric cooling fan connector
    • Accessory drive belt
    • Engine cooling fan and pulley
    • Water pump pulley
    • Power steering pump
    • Lower radiator hose from the water pump
    • Heater hose
    • Water pump and discard the gasket
To install:
  1. Clean the mating surfaces of all gasket material.
  2. Install or connect the following:
    • Water pump using a new gasket. Torque the bolts to 17 ft. lbs. (23 Nm).
    • Heater hose
    • Lower radiator hose
    • Water pump pulley. Torque the bolts to 20 ft. lbs. (27 Nm).
    • Power steering pump
    • Engine cooling fan and shroud. Torque the bolts to 31 inch lbs. (3 Nm).
    • Accessory drive belt
    • Electric cooling fan connector
    • Negative battery cable
  3. Fill and bleed the cooling system.
  4. Start the engine, check for leaks and repair if necessary.
3.7L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this manual.
  2. Drain the cooling system.
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:
    • Negative battery cable
    • Fan and clutch assembly from the pump
    • Fan shroud and fan assembly. If you’re reusing the fan clutch, keep it upright to avoid silicone fluid loss!
    • Lower hose
    • Water pump (8 bolts)

Maybe the thermostat is in the wrong way around, The top is the arched part where you see the spring
