This would actually be a 1600cc. Great reliable engines. Since these are air cooled engines, these do not use "head gaskets". There paper gaskets that are used at the bottom of the jug to the case but nothing is used for the jug to the head. Torque the head down to 26 ft lbs to achieve the proper fit. It is also not uncommon to have studs pull out of the case. Be very careful. The best thing you can do for yourself (and I started with this book too!!) is find a copy of "How to keep your Volkswagen alive and running, A guide for the complete idiot". It is an amazing book that puts everything into terms that even people who are not mechanics can understand and will walk you through every fix and procedure to get this back up and running. The copper rings are for the single port heads for the intake manifold. I'll be happy to help. I used to build these with my best friend in high school before going professional.

Spark to cylinder but appears to be dead new head does not run right

Was the same fault there before you changed the cylinder head? If so, that would point to piston problems on cylinder No4.

Are you able to do a compression test on the engine? If there's piston/ring trouble on the 4th cylinder that could cause a misfire because of poor compression.

The other thing that springs to mind is that there's something amiss with the valve clearances on cylinder No 4.

I'm not familiar with your car - does it have an overhead camshaft? Unfortunately when refitting an overhead camshaft after a rebuild, some owners have managed to bend a valve. This usually happens because the engine has been turned during disassembly/rebuild and the timing marks have not been aligned when refitting the camshaft.

This results in a valve in contact with a piston and when the camshaft is fitted and torqued down the valve becomes bent.

I think your problem may lie in either a bent valve or incorrect valve clearances.

A head gasket is a gasket that sits between the engine block and cylinder head in an internal combustion engine. Its purpose is to seal the cylinders. It will still start but it won't run that well and you will damage your engine if you run it with it blown. so check your head gasket again.

1992 vw jetta 1.6 turbo diesel, what is the cylinder head bolt torque spec?

!st thing is get the revised head gasket (used on 1993 up) for this engine from VW or Felpro, always use new head bolts or a repeat failure will occur. Using the revised head gasket here is the procedure to torque the head down, it is done in stages. PLease go to this site and read the whole procedure.

HEAD GASKET GONE AFTER 12000 MILES

When a h/gasket it done it is usually required to come back in after 1000k,s to be retensioned.A modified gasket is mainly fitted IF the head was shaved or reconditioned.Did they say to bring it back in for the head to be retensioned after the initial fitting? If not,it is their fault. It is the same as a new car.It requires the head gasket to be retensioned after 1000k,s.All cars are the same.Hope this helps you

I have a 1993 Lexus ES 300 that has overheated and the head gasket blew. I took the head to get it machined at a shop because it was bent, then put it back with a new head gasket, new water pump,...

Bad news, I had this happen once to my daughters Volkswagen Jetta, I replaced the head gasket and had the same symptoms you describe. i wound up having to take the head back off and took the gasket back to where I bought it and compared it to a new one and discovered that the holes in the one I had put on didn't match up with the new head gasket. The auto parts store gave me the new Head gasket at no charge because the other one was defective.
However hopefully this isn't your problem, it could be something as simple as a defective thermostat that just isn't opening after the engine reaches the correct tenperature. Check this first before tearing back into the engine.

I had the same problem with my T5 130. My mechanic replaced the head gasket to no avail, then we checked the oil filter, that was ok.then we went on to a web forum and found out that the AXD engine suffers from water pump failure. We took it off and it was corroded, the seal had failed and was pumping water into the block. My advice,CHECK WATER PUMP FIRST! Good luck Marc,Somerset.

1999 VW beetle over heats...a LOT

Sometimes, if the leak is small, when car is running and engine hot, you do not get dripping under the car because water is getting vapourized, before dripping down.

Check water level, if water level is going down, then there is either another leak, or the head gasket is going.

When head gasket starts to go , water is vapourized into the engine.

If car overheated after the radiator problem, it is not uncommon that this may had damaged the head gasket, go back to the dealer and complain, as after replacing radiator, the car should had been inspected properly for additional problems.

I have had exactly the same thing happen to me. In the end it was a faulty water pump which was allowing water into the engine.
